Book The 1954 Iowa Corn Yield Test

Download or read book The 1954 Iowa Corn Yield Test written by Charles D. Hutchcroft and published by . This book was released on 1955 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The main purpose of the Iowa Corn Yield Test is to compare the performance of corn hybrids and to make the information available to Iowa farmers. In 1954 we tested 90 corn hybrids at each of three locations in the northern section of Iowa. ... One-hundred corn hybrids were compared in each of the other three sections of the state. The hybrids were planted at three locations in each section, but the district 10 field was not harvested because of drouth conditions and a poor stand. They hybrids entered in the 1954 test were planted on about 72 percent of the total Iowa corn acreage, according to results from a survey of farmers. Six characteristics of each hybrid were recorded and summarized. These were yield, stand, moisture content at harvest, root and stalk lodging, and dropped ears. You will find a performance record for each hybrid for these characteristics in the tables of data. An index listing the hybrids tested in 1954 and the name and address of each entrant is given in the back of the bulletin. When the seed was packeted for planted, each entry was given a number. The entries were known only by this number until after the plots were harvested and the calculations completed. Therefore, no person concerned with the test know the identity of any entry. The presentation of these results does not imply approval of these hybrids by the Iowa Crop Improvement Association or the Iowa Agricultural Experiment Station." -- p. [2]

  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 2017-01-28
  • ISBN : 0309437385
  • Pages : 607 pages

Download or read book Genetically Engineered Crops written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-01-28 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genetically engineered (GE) crops were first introduced commercially in the 1990s. After two decades of production, some groups and individuals remain critical of the technology based on their concerns about possible adverse effects on human health, the environment, and ethical considerations. At the same time, others are concerned that the technology is not reaching its potential to improve human health and the environment because of stringent regulations and reduced public funding to develop products offering more benefits to society. While the debate about these and other questions related to the genetic engineering techniques of the first 20 years goes on, emerging genetic-engineering technologies are adding new complexities to the conversation. Genetically Engineered Crops builds on previous related Academies reports published between 1987 and 2010 by undertaking a retrospective examination of the purported positive and adverse effects of GE crops and to anticipate what emerging genetic-engineering technologies hold for the future. This report indicates where there are uncertainties about the economic, agronomic, health, safety, or other impacts of GE crops and food, and makes recommendations to fill gaps in safety assessments, increase regulatory clarity, and improve innovations in and access to GE technology.

Book The 1953 Iowa Corn Yield Test

Download or read book The 1953 Iowa Corn Yield Test written by Joseph Lee Robinson and published by . This book was released on 1954 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 1953 we tested 229 corn hybrids in the Iowa Corn Yield test. Each hybrid was tested at a minimum of three locations. The division of the state into districts and sections is shown on the map. Seven characteristics of each hybrid were recorded and summarized. These included yield, stand, moisture, root and stalk lodging, ear height and dropped ears. Each hybrid was ranked by a performance score based on yield, moisture and resistance to lodging and dropped ears. You will find records in the tables showing how each hybrid performed for the above characteristics. An index listing the hybrids tested in 1953 is given in the back of this bulletin. A majority of the entries in the test were made by commercial hybrid corn companies. The Iowa Crop Improvement Association also entered 10 widely grown hybrids in each section as determined by a survey of farmers. The purpose of the Iowa Corn Yield Test is to determine the performance of hybrids. It is not a contest and should not be confused with the 5-acre Iowa Master Corn Growers Contest." -- Foreword, p. [2]

Book Root Zone Water Quality Model

Download or read book Root Zone Water Quality Model written by Lajpat Ahuja and published by Water Resources Publication. This book was released on 2000 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication comes with computer software and presents a comprehensive simulation model designed to predict the hydrologic response, including potential for surface and groundwater contamination, of alternative crop-management systems. It simulates crop development and the movement of water, nutrients and pesticides over and through the root zone for a representative unit area of an agricultural field over multiple years. The model allows simulation of a wide spectrum of management practices and scenarios with special features such as the rapid transport of surface-applied chemicals through macropores to deeper depths and the preferential transport of chemicals within the soil matrix via mobile-immobile zones. The transfer of surface-applied chemicals (pesticides in particular) to runoff water is also an important component.

Book Statistical Procedures for Agricultural Research

Download or read book Statistical Procedures for Agricultural Research written by Kwanchai A. Gomez and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1984-02-17 with total page 698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here in one easy-to-understand volume are the statistical procedures and techniques the agricultural researcher needs to know in order to design, implement, analyze, and interpret the results of most experiments with crops. Designed specifically for the non-statistician, this valuable guide focuses on the practical problems of the field researcher. Throughout, it emphasizes the use of statistics as a tool of research—one that will help pinpoint research problems and select remedial measures. Whenever possible, mathematical formulations and statistical jargon are avoided. Originally published by the International Rice Research Institute, this widely respected guide has been totally updated and much expanded in this Second Edition. It now features new chapters on the analysis of multi-observation data and experiments conducted over time and space. Also included is a chapter on experiments in farmers' fields, a subject of major concern in developing countries where agricultural research is commonly conducted outside experiment stations. Statistical Procedures for Agricultural Research, Second Edition will prove equally useful to students and professional researchers in all agricultural and biological disciplines. A wealth of examples of actual experiments help readers to choose the statistical method best suited for their needs, and enable even the most complicated procedures to be easily understood and directly applied.
