Book 1991 Belize Family Health Survey

Download or read book 1991 Belize Family Health Survey written by Belize Family Health Survey and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains the findings of the 1991 Belize Family Health Survey, which examined the following: fertility; attitudes towards childbearing;knowledge, use and source of contraception; unmet need for family planning services; use of and potential demand for surgical contraception; use of maternal and child health services; breastfeeding and weaning practices; immunization levels; child mortality and morbidity; and knowledge of AIDS. From January 15-February 19, 1991, the Ministry of Finance's Central Statistical Office surveyed 2656 women 15-44 years of age. Total fertility rate (TFR) measured 4.5. Among women of high socioeconomic status, TFR measured 2.7, compared to 6.7 among low socioeconomic status women. Ideal family size was estimated at 3.4 children. 95% of those women surveyed had knowledge of contraception, while 47% of women in a union reported using contraception at the time of the survey. Female sterilization accounted for 40% of all contraceptive use. 95% of the women reported receiving prenatal care, but only 40% indicated receiving a postpartum checkup. 90% of children under 24 months had been breastfed; the mean duration of breastfeeding was 12 months. Overall vaccination coverage for children 9-59 months of age was 75%, but only 47% of children had been completely immunized before their first birthday. Infant mortality was estimated at 42 deaths/1000 live births. 97% of the women reported having heard of AIDS. And while 90% of the women knew of the modes of transmission, only 2% of the women who believed themselves to be at risk of contracting AIDS were found to be using condoms properly.

Book Intimate Partner Violence and Advocate Response

Download or read book Intimate Partner Violence and Advocate Response written by Melissa Beske and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2016-04-21 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intimate Partner Violence and Advocate Response: Redefining Love in Western Belize offers new insight into the cross-cultural analysis of gender-based intimate partner violence by blending activist anthropology with in-depth ethnographic research to evaluate and help ameliorate the crisis in Belize. Drawing from twenty months of fieldwork in the Belizean Cayo District conducted between 2002 and 2013, Melissa A. Beske investigates the prevalence and complexity of partner abuse, the contributing cultural and structural factors, and the advocate dynamics across local, national, and transnational frameworks in combating the problem. Combining enlivened narratives, comparative viewpoints, and scholar-activism, this book not only illustrates the lived suffering of partner abuse in Cayo, but it also engages with the passionate commitment of survivors and supporters as they endeavor to create a more equitable and peaceful community. In doing so, it demonstrates an effective strategy for the interdisciplinary assessment of gender-based abuse, which satisfies demands for theoretical impartiality while simultaneously enabling researchers to take an ethical stand in social causes.

Book A Good Position for Birth

Download or read book A Good Position for Birth written by Aminata Maraesa and published by Vanderbilt University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-30 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to understand the local realities of health and development initiatives undertaken to reduce maternal and infant mortality, the author accompanied rural health nurses as they traveled to villages accessible only by foot over waterlogged terrain to set up mobile prenatal and well-child clinics. Through sustained interactions with pregnant women, midwives, traditional birth attendants, and bush doctors, Maraesa encountered reproductive beliefs and practices ranging from obeah pregnancy to 'nointing that compete with global health care workers' directives about risk, prenatal care, and hospital versus home birth. Fear and shame are prominent affective tropes that Maraesa uses to understand women's attitudes toward reproduction that are at times contrary to development discourse but that make sense in the lived experiences of the women of southern Belize.

Book The Power of Greed

Download or read book The Power of Greed written by Michael Rosberg and published by University of Alberta. This book was released on 2005-08-16 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Power of Greed recommends a shift away from the moralistic way we often go about doing international development. It says we can be too focused on our own ambitions for others and too unaware of what they’re up to on their own behalf. It argues that the desperate and greedy behaviours of the poor and their oppressors are not the enemies of international development, but its potential allies. It also says we ought to resist taking sides in defence of the poor. Productive alliances between oppressed and oppressor are possible if the conditions are right. Furthermore, it says that we need to tie national institutional and economic strengthening measures to the creation of sustainable interest groups at the grassroots. Only they could be in a position to prevent greed and corruption at the top in a sustainable way. For these reasons, The Power of Greed tries to get us to focus on doing more about the opportunity structure in the developing world and, for the rest, to rely on the opportunism of the population.
