Book Handbook of Computational Statistics

Download or read book Handbook of Computational Statistics written by James E. Gentle and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-07-06 with total page 1180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of Computational Statistics - Concepts and Methods (second edition) is a revision of the first edition published in 2004, and contains additional comments and updated information on the existing chapters, as well as three new chapters addressing recent work in the field of computational statistics. This new edition is divided into 4 parts in the same way as the first edition. It begins with "How Computational Statistics became the backbone of modern data science" (Ch.1): an overview of the field of Computational Statistics, how it emerged as a separate discipline, and how its own development mirrored that of hardware and software, including a discussion of current active research. The second part (Chs. 2 - 15) presents several topics in the supporting field of statistical computing. Emphasis is placed on the need for fast and accurate numerical algorithms, and some of the basic methodologies for transformation, database handling, high-dimensional data and graphics treatment are discussed. The third part (Chs. 16 - 33) focuses on statistical methodology. Special attention is given to smoothing, iterative procedures, simulation and visualization of multivariate data. Lastly, a set of selected applications (Chs. 34 - 38) like Bioinformatics, Medical Imaging, Finance, Econometrics and Network Intrusion Detection highlight the usefulness of computational statistics in real-world applications.

Book geoENV II Geostatistics for Environmental Applications

Download or read book geoENV II Geostatistics for Environmental Applications written by Jaime Gómez-Hernández and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1999-06-30 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains selected contributions from the geoENV98 - the Second European Conference on Geostatistics for Environmental Sciences, held in Valencia, Spain in November 1998. This second book of the geoENV series illustrates the developments on geostatistics as applied to the environmental sciences which have occurred during the past two years. It also presents practical applications which will be of interest to both researchers and practitioners. The book starts with three keynote papers on ecology, climatology and soil science, followed by forty-three contributions. The contents of the book are eminently practical. The objective of the editors was to compile a set of papers in which the reader could perceive how geostatistics is applied within the environmental sciences. A few selected theoretical contributions are also included. The papers are organized in the following seven main areas Air pollution Climatology Ecology Hydrogeology Soil Science Theory Other applications presenting applications varying from particle matter analysis, noise exposure sampling, space-time modeling of ozone levels, downscaling of precipitation, kriging with categorical external drift, analysis of fish abundance, combining variograms and radio-telemetry in ecology, kriging radionuclide deposition, mapping of soil contamination, network design for soil monitoring, inverse modeling in hydrogeology, groundwater transport modeling, coastal evolution mapping to spatial modeling of cancer ratios. Audience: This publication will be of great interest and practical value to geostatisticians working both in academia and in industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The health effects of tobacco smoke on smokers are well defined. However, the effects on non-smokers are not so clear. Which of the many diseases, cancers, and pathologies that are certainly associated with smoking are also induced by tobacco smoke in non-smokers? What are the effects on non-smokers of smoking bans in the workplace and changes in a

Download or read book Statistical Anaysis and Modeling of Automotive Emissions written by Timothy C. Coburn and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2001-04 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contains many of the papers presented in a mini-symposium on statistical analysis & modeling of automotive emissions held in Aug. 1999. The articles represent the efforts of approximately 20 authors & co-authors from across industry, gov't., & academia & cover a diverse array of topics regarding fundamental methodological issues, advanced statistical techniques, & specific case studies. Two papers included in the mini-symposium involved the assessment of sulfur in diesel fuel on the performance of emissions control devices & the forecasting of ozone standard exceedances that occur partly in response to vehicular traffic vol. & dispersion.

Book Toward Environmental Justice

  • Author : Institute of Medicine
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 1999-02-25
  • ISBN : 0309174228
  • Pages : 151 pages

Download or read book Toward Environmental Justice written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-02-25 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Driven by community-based organizations and supported by a growing body of literature, the environmental justice movement contends that poor and minority populations are burdened with more than their share of toxic waste, pesticide runoff, and other hazardous byproducts of our modern economic life. Is environmental degradation worse in poor and minority communities? Do these communities suffer more adverse health effects as a result? The committee addresses these questions and explores how current fragmentation in health policy could be replaced with greater coordination among federal, state, and local parties. The book is highlighted with case studies from five locations where the committee traveled to hear citizen and researcher testimony. It offers detailed examinations in these areas: Identifying environmental hazards and assessing risk for populations of varying ethnic, social, and economic backgrounds, and the need for methodologies that uniquely suit the populations at risk. Identifying basic, clinical, and occupational research needs and meeting challenges to research on minorities. Expanding environmental education from an ecological focus to a public health focus for all levels of health professionals. Legal and ethical aspects of environmental health issues. The book makes recommendations to decision-makers in the areas of public health, research, and education of health professionals and outlines health policy considerations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of mining patterns is becoming a very active research area and efficient techniques have been widely applied to problems in industry, government, and science. From the initial definition and motivated by real-applications, the problem of mining patterns not only addresses the finding of itemsets but also more and more complex patterns. Successes and New Directions in Data Mining addresses existing solutions for data mining, with particular emphasis on potential real-world applications. Capturing defining research on topics such as fuzzy set theory, clustering algorithms, semi-supervised clustering, modeling and managing data mining patterns, and sequence motif mining, this book is an indispensable resource for library collections.
