Book Regulation and Compliance in the Atlantic Fisheries

Download or read book Regulation and Compliance in the Atlantic Fisheries written by Stig S. Gezelius and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about fishermen's reasons for obeying fisheries law. The fish harvesting industry has become subject to state interference to an increasing extent over the past twenty years. As natural resources become scarce and subsequent fisheries regulations abound, the question of law-abidingness is brought to the public agenda. However, there is still little empirical data as regards the dynamics of compliance in this field, and this book aims to meet a demand for in-depth knowledge. The cases studied can be regarded as instances of economies dependent on the harvesting of natural resources for both household and the market, and the study aims to contribute to the building of more adequate theory on the dynamics of compliance in such economies. However, focusing on a specific type of setting seldom constitutes a safe escape route for getting away from more pervasive sociological questions, and it certainly does not in this case. As any attempt to explain social phenomena, this study is faced with the fundamental sociological question of how the acts of individuals can best be understood. The question concerns the interface between the individual and the collectivity – between collective morality and self-interest. It thus deals with classical sociological issues such as the nature and regulatory capacity of group norms and sanctions, and the forms and roles of rationality and strategic action.

The discussions focussed on the research surveys, sentinel surveys, other research projects, and preliminary fishery information for the following stocks: herring, cod, American plaice, flounder, white hake, and dogfish.

Book Rebuilding of Marine Fisheries Global review

Download or read book Rebuilding of Marine Fisheries Global review written by Serge Garcia and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Rebuilding depleted stocks is a central part of the fisheries governance agenda. By analysing the available literature, Part 1 of "Rebuilding of marine fisheries" provides a global review of the emergence of the rebuilding paradigm, its key concepts, the trends in fishery resources, and the empirical evidence available on stocks depletion, collapse and rebuilding. It addresses the bio-ecological, economic, and human dimensions of rebuilding or restoration of stocks, multispecies assemblages and habitats/ecosystems and touches on the need for rebuilding at the whole sector level when depletion has become widespread and chronic. The human imensions of stocks and fisheries are given particular attention, looking at conflicting objectives, the bio-economy of rebuilding, its costs and benefits, and the distributional effects of the related reform among actors with their potential social consequences in the short and long terms. Governance is addressed in detail: legal and policy frameworks; rationale and objectives of a rebuilding regime; alternative rebuilding strategies; reference values and protocols; regulatory time-frames; risk management and harvest control rules; impacts of climatic oscillations; management tool-box; implementation guidance and performance evaluation. The document ends with a review of the determinants of success of a rebuilding programme."--Publisher's description for part 1.

Book Review of the State of World Marine Fishery Resources

Marine Resources Service and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 1994 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document provides a review, commentary and tabulations of the main trends that have occurred in exploitation of fisheries resources since the 1970s, largely as they are reflected in the FAO database on fishery landings, supplemented with selected information from the fishery literature. Reviews were prepared separately for the 15 main areas into which FAO divides the world's oceans for statistical purposes. They are then compared from a global perspective to reveal relative trends by species and areas, which are highlighted. Several special topics are reviewed, including tuna and tuna-like species, whales and dolphins, and environmental issues in fisheries.

Download or read book Lament for an Ocean written by Michael Harris and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2013-07-09 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The northern cod have been almost wiped out. Once the most plentiful fish on the Grand Banks off the coast of Newfoundland, the cod is now on the brink of extinction, and tens of thousands of people in Atlantic Canada have been left without work by a 1992 moratorium on fishing the stock. Today, the Pacific salmon stocks are in similar trouble – victims of the same blind, stupid greed. Angry, accusatory fingers have been pointed at various possible culprits for the collapse of the cod – at the Spanish and Portuguese, who for hundreds of years sent ever-bigger fleets to the Grand Banks; at the factory-freezer trawlers, which “vacuumed” the ocean floor for the prized fish; at those inshore fishermen who circumvented the rules governing the fishery; at the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans, which is responsible for managing the fishery; at the harp seal, the cod’s competitor for food, whose numbers have exploded in recent years; even at Nature, for lowering the temperature of the ocean. In Lament for an Ocean, the award-winning true-crime writer Michael Harris investigates the real causes of the most wanton destruction of a natural resource in North American history since the buffalo were wiped off the face of the prairies. The story he carefully unfolds is the sorry tale of how, despite the repeated and urgent warnings of ocean scientists, the northern cod was ruthlessly exploited.

Book The Rock in a Hard Place

Download or read book The Rock in a Hard Place written by Doug May and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the effects of unemployment insurance (UI) on the life and economy of Atlantic Canada in general and Newfoundland in particular, and proposes a dramatic change in the way that federal dollars are delivered to that region. The authors discuss the role of UI as insurance and as income redistribution, and criticize the current UI system for its deficiencies in terms of horizontal and vertical equity, efficiency, and benefits to society. They examine these deficiencies more closely by focusing on the fishing industries (harvesting and processing) and also describe the importance of UI to the economies of the Atlantic Provinces. The authors end with a vision for income security reform in the region and suggestions for handling the transition period to a reformed UI system. Three data appendices contain tables on how UI and social assistance are distributed across provinces, regions within the provinces, income groups, and industries. The book ends with two short papers commenting on the authors' work.

Book The Antigonish Movement

Download or read book The Antigonish Movement written by Anne McDonald Alexander and published by Thompson Educational Publishing. This book was released on 1997 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Antigonish Movement flourished over fifty years ago but it continues to fascinate and challenge Canadians today. In the 1930s, as now, many people believed that the problems and injustices of life resulted from forces beyond their control. Moses Coady could not have disagreed more. With missionary zeal he implored people to change themselves and their society. Liberation, he insisted, could be achieved through adult education. Do we today have the confidence to make such a claim? The Antigonish Movement is a symbol of an activist heritage in adult education. In this book, Anne Alexander examines the background to this important movement, its activities and the individuals involved, in order to show its continuing relevance to practitioners of adult education today.

This book was released on 1994 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fishing for Truth is the complex story of the role of science in the decline of the Northern Cod stocks. At issue are conflicting interpretations of recent events, institutional and scientific texts, and scientific data. The central claim of the book is that all knowledge, including scientific knowledge, is influenced by social process. Finlayson, a sociologist, conducted extensive interviews with scientists and bureaucrats in the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO); he argues that failure to predict fish stocks is closely related to the failure to recognize how scientists' interpretations of natural reality are themselves socially constructed to a crucial degree.
