Book From Depression to Devolution

Download or read book From Depression to Devolution written by Leon Gooberman and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2017-02-01 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the twentieth century, Wales underwent rapid and far-reaching economic upheavals on such a scale that few avoided their impacts – from recessions, war, changing fortunes within the iconic steel and coal industries, the rise and decline of manufacturing, as well as the gradual rise to dominance of the service sector – the changes were as dramatic as was the intensity of attempts to deal with their consequences. Wales was a laboratory for government intervention in the economy, ranging from the attraction of investment and the clearance of land made derelict by industry, to the regeneration of urban areas. This is the first book to focus on these actions and to outline why, how and with what effect governments intervened, and it contains timely commentary as economic performance remains one of the most important issues facing contemporary Wales.

Book Money Laundering Counter measures in the European Union

Download or read book Money Laundering Counter measures in the European Union written by Valsamis Mitsilegas and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past fifteen years witnessed the emergence globally of a plethora of legislative measures aimed at countering money laundering. These developments have been inextricably linked with the growing international focus on newly perceived and/or prioritised global security threats such as organised crime and terrorism ' with money laundering counter-measures deemed essential to counter these threats. Taking these developments into account, this book examines in detail the evolution and content of money laundering counter-measures in the European Union. These measures constitute a new paradigm of security governance, achieved through three principal methods: criminalisation, consisting in the emergence of new criminal offences; responsibilisation, consisting in the mobilisation of the private sector to co-operate with the authorities in the fight against money laundering; and the emphasis on the administration of knowledge, through the establishment of new institutions, the financial intelligence units, with extensive powers to administer a wide range of information provided by the private sector. This paradigm may pose significant challenges to fundamental legal principles and to well-established social structures and the book attempts to address this balance. This up-to-date analysis includes the provisions of the new EU money laundering Directive which was formally adopted in December 2001.

Book Muslim Minorities and The National Commission for Minorities in India

Download or read book Muslim Minorities and The National Commission for Minorities in India written by Syed Najiullah and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-09-22 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plural societies all over the world are facing the challenge of integrating the minorities into mainstream polity and society. India is a land of many languages, cultures and religions. It is an ideal place where one can see the minorities in their different dimensions. It is the home to the second largest Muslim population in the world, and their integration into mainstream politics has remained a challenge to the secular polity of India. The present work ‘Muslim Minorities and the National Commission for Minorities in India’, deals with the Muslim situation in India and the institutional response of the state towards them. It locates the problem of Muslim minorities in the larger context of minority rights and discusses the efficacy of the redress mechanisms, like National Commission for Minorities, in forging the community within larger society. The study highlights that the institutionalization of minority rights and the safeguards, like the monitoring mechanisms, are not just enough, and should also be supported by strong appreciation for the principle of pluralism for the integration of minority communities in the plural societies. The book will be useful to academicians, researchers, students and general public interested in the study of political science, public policy, sociology, plural societies, and minority rights.

With an eminent list of international contributors this book provides an overview of the role of the Ombudsman in relation to healthcare in countries with substantial cultural and historical differences. It demonstrates practical ways to protect patients' rights, looking at how each system operates, identifying the best components from each, as well as proposing future reforms. Book Damages and Compensation Culture

Download or read book Damages and Compensation Culture written by Eoin Quill and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-11-17 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of the essays in this book is on the relationship between compensation culture, social values and tort damages for personal injuries. A central concern of the public and political perception of personal injuries claims is the high cost of tort claims to society, reflected in insurance premiums, often accompanied by an assumption that tort law and practice is flawed and improperly raising such costs. The aims of this collection are to first clarify the relationship between tort damages for personal injuries and the social values that the law seeks to reflect and to balance, then to critically assess tort reforms, including both proposals for reform and actual implemented reforms, in light of how they advance or hinder those values. Reforms of substantive and procedural law in respect of personal injury damages are analysed, with perspectives from England and Wales, Canada, Australia, Ireland and continental Europe. The essays offer valuable insights to anyone interested in the reform of tort law or the tort process in respect of personal injuries.

Book Vanishing Borders

Download or read book Vanishing Borders written by Hilary French and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-17 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world is shrinking faster than ever. Goods, money, microbes, pollution, people and ideas are crossing boundaries ever more frequently. The implications for our future and for the health of the planet are profound. Vanishing Borders outlines the ecological challenges posed and then goes on to define the necessary strategies for tackling them. Presently, national governments are singularly ill-equipped for tackling transitional environmental problems-from ozone depletion to soaring trade in commodities such as timbre- problems which are climbing ever higher on the international political agenda. Industrial and developing countries are on a collision course over climate change, and water shortages are creating tensions in several parts of the world. The author argues that only a worldwide commitment to strengthening treaties and institutions needed to integrate ecological considerations into the rules of global commerce holds out hope. Over 200 international environmental treaties exist but most need more stringent conditions and enforcement, and continuing support from NGO and business communities. Significantly, the digital revolution, integral in itself to processes to globalization, offers channels through which powerful coalitions can effect change. The book provides a compelling and accessible analysis and a clear plan of action in pursuit of environmental stability. Originally published in 2000

Book OLAF at the Crossroads

    Book Details:
  • Author : Constantin Stefanou
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2011-08-31
  • ISBN : 184731855X
  • Pages : 228 pages

Download or read book OLAF at the Crossroads written by Constantin Stefanou and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-08-31 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors offer many insights into the regulatory, operational and institutional opportunities and challenges for OLAF, the European Commission's Anti-Fraud Office. Since OLAF was set up in 1999, significant changes in its functional environment have taken place including in EU criminal law and especially in mutual assistance and substantive criminal law; the reconstruction of Eurojust and Europol through recent Regulations and Memoranda of Cooperation; and the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty. The authors advance the view that OLAF's current legal framework must address these issues adequately. The approach they take is multi-disciplinary. OLAF is examined here through the prisms of EU politics and national, European and (to some extent) comparative law, focusing not only on the identification of current problems in regulation and procedure but also on its positioning within the context of European integration. Operational issues are then extensively discussed, making this a book for practitioners as well as policy makers and academics. The book addresses the theoretical and practical aspects of anti-fraud actions within both criminal and civil aspects of public law. Although OLAF works within an incomplete EU legal framework and with varying cooperation by national authorities, its staff have devised mechanisms that address some of these issues. Nevertheless, rules covering procedural and operational issues will need to be safeguarded within future legislation.
