Download or read book Road Pricing written by Georgina Santos and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2004-07-31 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traffic congestion affects towns and cities everywhere and in some places it is regarded as one of the most urgent and important problems in need of a solution. Road pricing is undoubtedly recognised as an effective traffic demand management tool. The recent London congestion charging scheme seems to be showing that public and political opposition is not insurmountable. Thus, the ghost that prevented the introduction of a policy supported by transport economists for over 80 years seems to have disappeared or at least, weakened. The book contains twelve papers useful to different types of audience, such as researchers and postgraduate students, civil servants, policy makers and consultants. The first part is mainly theoretical and concentrates on second-best congestion pricing including pricing in urban contexts, the impact on the performance of the road network, optimal locations and charge levels, dynamic aspects such as time variation of tolls, potential impacts of road pricing on costs and service quality of public transport buses, and efficiency costs and transport sector effects of different types of pricing when they guarantee a balanced budget per mode. The second part contains chapters that describe the schemes in place around the world such as Singapore, Norway, London, and the US. The volume is an update of the state of the art on the subject and the first one to have been written and appear after the London scheme was implemented and to contain an assessment of its preliminary impacts.
Download or read book Best Practices in Metropolitan Transportation Planning written by Reid Ewing and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-06-27 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Planning at a metropolitan scale is important for effective management of urban growth, transportation systems, air quality, and watershed and green-spaces. It is fundamental to efforts to promote social justice and equity. Best Practices in Metropolitan Transportation Planning shows how the most innovative metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs) in the United States are addressing these issues using their mandates to improve transportation networks while pursuing emerging sustainability goals at the same time. As both a policy analysis and a practical how-to guide, this book presents cutting-edge original research on the role accessibility plays - and should play - in transportation planning, tracks how existing plans have sought to balance competing priorities using scenario planning and other strategies, assesses the results of various efforts to reduce automobile dependence in cities, and explains how to make planning documents more powerful and effective. In highlighting the most innovative practices implemented by MPOs, regional planning councils, city and county planning departments and state departments of transportation, this book aims to influence other planning organizations, as well as influence federal and state policy discussions and legislation.

Download or read book Intelligent Transport Systems written by Roger Stough and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stough (public policy, George Mason U.) brings together nine contributions that evaluate the prospects for Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) to solve the dilemma caused by increasing demands for mobility combined with reluctance to continue to build traditional transportation infrastructure such as highways. These systems encompass a complex of information technologies. The chapters offer case studies of systems deployed in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area and use multi-criteria methodologies to evaluate the cost- effectiveness of the programs. Electronic tolling systems, variable message signs, automatic truck rollover warning systems, and several other technologies are discussed and evaluated. The final chapter applies simulation modeling to estimate the effects the addition of several ITS technologies will have on congestion and mobility in the Northern Virginia region. c. Book News Inc.
Download or read book Enhanced Planning Review of the New Orleans Metropolitan Area written by Melissa M. Laube and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FTA and FHWA have initiated a series of joint Enhanced Planning Reviews to assess the impact of the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 (ISTEA) on the planning processes conducted by the transportation agencies serving metropolitan areas. The EPRs are also intended to determine the effects of planning on transportation investment processes. The EPR for New Orleans included a federal site visit on 6-9 November 1995. At the conclusion of the site visit, the federal review team presented preliminary observations and recommendations to the local agencies taking part in the review. This Final Report describes the EPR in detail and provides summary conclusions as well as a complete set of the observations and recommendations.

Book excerpt: A multi-disciplinary approach to transportation planning fundamentals The Transportation Planning Handbook is a comprehensive, practice-oriented reference that presents the fundamental concepts of transportation planning alongside proven techniques. This new fourth edition is more strongly focused on serving the needs of all users, the role of safety in the planning process, and transportation planning in the context of societal concerns, including the development of more sustainable transportation solutions. The content structure has been redesigned with a new format that promotes a more functionally driven multimodal approach to planning, design, and implementation, including guidance toward the latest tools and technology. The material has been updated to reflect the latest changes to major transportation resources such as the HCM, MUTCD, HSM, and more, including the most current ADA accessibility regulations. Transportation planning has historically followed the rational planning model of defining objectives, identifying problems, generating and evaluating alternatives, and developing plans. Planners are increasingly expected to adopt a more multi-disciplinary approach, especially in light of the rising importance of sustainability and environmental concerns. This book presents the fundamentals of transportation planning in a multidisciplinary context, giving readers a practical reference for day-to-day answers. Serve the needs of all users Incorporate safety into the planning process Examine the latest transportation planning software packages Get up to date on the latest standards, recommendations, and codes Developed by The Institute of Transportation Engineers, this book is the culmination of over seventy years of transportation planning solutions, fully updated to reflect the needs of a changing society. For a comprehensive guide with practical answers, The Transportation Planning Handbook is an essential reference.
