Book 1996 Index of Wind Wave Directional Spectra Measured at Harvest Platform

Download or read book 1996 Index of Wind Wave Directional Spectra Measured at Harvest Platform written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report indexes characteristic parameters of and describes a means of access to 1,610 wind wave frequency direction spectra observed at the Texaco Oil Company Harvest Platform during calendar year 1996. Located at about the 200-m depth contour approximately 20 km west of Point Conception, California, the platform supports a spatial array of six pressure gauges, data from which are processed with an iterative maximum likelihood directional estimator (IMLE). Nine parameters are defined, listed, and graphed in time series form: characteristic wave height, peak frequency, peak direction, four circular moments (mean direction, width, skewness, and kurtosis), and two parameters (directional spread and asymmetry) derived from quartile points of directional spectra. This report is the fourth and final in a series of annual reports summarizing IMLE-based directional spectra, and covers 1996 through early September when the array was taken off line for a major overhaul.

Book Real time Coastal Observing Systems for Marine Ecosystem Dynamics and Harmful Algal Blooms

Download or read book Real time Coastal Observing Systems for Marine Ecosystem Dynamics and Harmful Algal Blooms written by Babin, Marcel and published by UNESCO. This book was released on 2008-06-05 with total page 880 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proliferation of harmful phytoplankton in marine ecosystems can cause massive fish kills, contaminate seafood with toxins, impact local and regional economies and dramatically affect ecological balance. Real-time observations are essential for effective short-term operational forecasting, but observation and modelling systems are still being developed. This volume provides guidance for developing real-time and near real-time sensing systems for observing and predicting plankton dynamics, including harmful algal blooms, in coastal waters. The underlying theory is explained and current trends in research and monitoring are discussed.Topics covered include: coastal ecosystems and dynamics of harmful algal blooms; theory and practical applications of in situ and remotely sensed optical detection of microalgal distributions and composition; theory and practical applications of in situ biological and chemical sensors for targeted species and toxin detection; integrated observing systems and platforms for detection; diagnostic and predictive modelling of ecosystems and harmful algal blooms, including data assimilation techniques; observational needs for the public and government; and future directions for research and operations.

Book Oceanography of the British Columbia Coast

Download or read book Oceanography of the British Columbia Coast written by Richard E. Thomson and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the physical aspects of the sea as exemplified by the Pacific Ocean and the contiguous waters of the British Columbia coast. Although principally devoted to waves, currents and tides, the book spans a broad spectrum of topics ranging from meteorology and marine biology to past and present marine geology. It attempts to elucidate the nature of oceanic motions and to relate them to everyday experience for the general interest of the casual reader and for the practical benefit of the professional mariner, scientist, or engineer.

Book Statistics of Directional Data

Download or read book Statistics of Directional Data written by K. V. Mardia and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-07-03 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Probability and Mathematical Statistics: A Series of Monographs and Textbooks: Statistics of Directional Data aims to provide a systematic account of statistical theory and methodology for observations which are directions. The publication first elaborates on angular data and frequency distributions, descriptive measures, and basic concepts and theoretical models. Discussions focus on moments and measures of location and dispersion, distribution function, corrections for grouping, calculation of the mean direction and the circular variance, interrelations between different units of angular measurement, and diagrammatical representation. The book then examines fundamental theorems and distribution theory, point estimation, and tests for samples from von Mises populations. The text takes a look at non-parametric tests, distributions on spheres, and inference problems on the sphere. Topics include tests for axial data, point estimation, distribution theory, moments and limiting distributions, and tests of goodness of fit and tests of uniformity. The publication is a dependable reference for researchers interested in probability and mathematical statistics.

Book The Interaction of Ocean Waves and Wind

Download or read book The Interaction of Ocean Waves and Wind written by Peter Janssen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-10-28 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was published in 2004. The Interaction of Ocean Waves and Wind describes in detail the two-way interaction between wind and ocean waves and shows how ocean waves affect weather forecasting on timescales of 5 to 90 days. Winds generate ocean waves, but at the same time airflow is modified due to the loss of energy and momentum to the waves; thus, momentum loss from the atmosphere to the ocean depends on the state of the waves. This volume discusses ocean wave evolution according to the energy balance equation. An extensive overview of nonlinear transfer is given, and as a by-product the role of four-wave interactions in the generation of extreme events, such as freak waves, is discussed. Effects on ocean circulation are described. Coupled ocean-wave, atmosphere modelling gives improved weather and wave forecasts. This volume will interest ocean wave modellers, physicists and applied mathematicians, and engineers interested in shipping and coastal protection.
