Book Handbook of Psychiatric Genetics

Download or read book Handbook of Psychiatric Genetics written by Kenneth Blum and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1996-10-29 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychiatric genetics is an exciting new discipline that explores how our minds and behavior are influenced by our genes. Increased interest in this area of medical genetics has been sparked by advances in molecular genetic techniques, the genome project, the neurosciences, the role of genes in somatic diseases, and the linking of specific genes with complex mental disorders. This Handbook is the definitive resource on this complex, and sometimes controversial, new field.

Book Smith and Williams Introduction to the Principles of Drug Design and Action Third Edition

Download or read book Smith and Williams Introduction to the Principles of Drug Design and Action Third Edition written by H. John Smith and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-05-15 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third edition of this popular textbook builds on the excellent foundations laid down by the earlier editions. It provides a thorough introduction to the principles of rational drug design, adopting a 'from the bench to the market place' approach. As knowledge of biological systems has expanded and the number of techniques available for exploring and visualizing their components has increased, it has become possible to design drugs specifically for a given target. This unique insight has revolutionized the process of drug development for specific disease states, and in this textbook both novel and established approaches are incorporated. The introductory text explains the principles of drug design using real examples. These illustrate the discovery of 'lead' compounds and their manipulation to produce non-toxic drug candidates that will be successfully metabolized to interact with target receptors in a predicted fashion. In addition to fully updating the contents of the previous edition, the Editor has included important new sections on the pharmacological consequences of drug chirality, agonists and antagonists of neurotransmitters, and the process involved in proceeding from program sanction to clinical trials

Book Peptidergic G Protein coupled Receptors

Download or read book Peptidergic G Protein coupled Receptors written by Pierangelo Geppetti and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peptides are a rapidly growing class of mediators whose activity regulates homeostasis as well as pathological processes. Most of the peptide-activated receptors belong to the superfamily of 7 transmembrane domain receptors coupled to G proteins. Peptides of different sizes (from a few to more than 100 aminoacids) activate peptidergic receptors by interacting at specific sites, that often differ from those where antagonists bind. Other receptors are activated by proteases that, by cleaving the receptor extracellular region, unmask a tethered ligand. G protein-coupled receptors for chemokines represent the way of entry of the HIV virus in target cells. The great impact of non peptide agonist/antagonists in current and future medicine reflects these large variety of functions and modes of activation of peptidergic G protein-coupled receptors.

Book Elements of Molecular Neurobiology

Download or read book Elements of Molecular Neurobiology written by C. U. M. Smith and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2003-06-13 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition of the popular text incorporates recent advances in neurobiology enabled by modern molecular biology techniques. Understanding how the brain works from a molecular level allows research to better understand behaviours, cognition, and neuropathologies. Since the appearance six years ago of the second edition, much more has been learned about the molecular biology of development and its relations with early evolution. This "evodevo" (as it has come to be known) framework also has a great deal of bearing on our understanding of neuropathologies as dysfunction of early onset genes can cause neurodegeneration in later life. Advances in our understanding of the genomes and proteomes of a number of organisms also greatly influence our understanding of neurobiology. * Well known and widely used as a text throughout the UK, good reviews from students and lecturers. * Good complement to Fundementals of Psychopharmacology by Brian Leonard. This book will be of particular interest to biomedical undergraduates undertaking a neuroscience unit, neuroscience postgraduates, physiologists, pharmacologists. It is also a useful basic reference for university libraries. Maurice Elphick, Queen Mary, University of London "I do like this book and it is the recommended textbook for my course in Molecular Neuroscience. The major strength of the book is the overall simplicity of the format both in terms of layout and diagrams."

Book Concise Dictionary of Pharmacological Agents

Download or read book Concise Dictionary of Pharmacological Agents written by I.K. Morton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this dictionary is to provide a convenient and affordable personal desk reference resource. The authors, who have many years experience in pharmacological research, teaching and editing, recognized a need for a single up-to-date volume encompassing material that hitherto could be gathered only from a well-stocked library. This book comprises two main sections: an A-Z listing of drugs and their properties; and a descriptive glossary of technical terms. The level and scope of this reference material will make it essential for pharmacologists and medicinal chemists, from the graduate student to established worker. It should also be valuable to workers in allied biomedical diSCiplines, such as biochemistry and physiology, medical students and science writers and editors. Scope The dictionary is centred on pharmacologically active agents. Workers in drug-related diSCiplines need to correctly identify individual agents from an arsenal of pharmacologically active compounds, each with a number of alternative drug names according to the country or naming convention.
