Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining historical, literary and ethnographic approaches, Calling the Station Home draws a fine-grained portrait of New Zealand high-country farm families whose material culture, social arrangements, geographic knowledge, and linguistic practices reveal the ways in which the social production of space and the spatial construction of society are mutually constituted. The book speaks directly to national and international debates about cultural legitimacy, indigenous land claims, and environmental resource management by highlighting settler-descendant expressions of belonging and indigeneity in the white British diaspora.

Download or read book Rangeland Desertification written by Ólafur Arnalds and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Desertification has occurred worldwide. The biophysical and socio-economic complexity of this phenomenon has challenged our ability to categorize, inventory, monitor and repair the condition of degraded lands. One of the most important distinctions to be made in relation to land degradation is between cultivated land used for annual crop production and `rangelands'. Grazing by free-roaming livestock is the traditional primary use of the world's rangelands. However, there is growing recognition of the importance of these vast acreages for wildlife habitat, hydrology and ground water recharge, recreation and aesthetics. This text focuses on the desertification of rangelands and explores processes, problems and solutions. Chapters in the first section evaluate interactions between `natural' and human-induced disturbance regimes, thresholds, and non-linear change with respect to vegetation, hydrology, nutrients and erosion. Chapters in the second section examine socio-economic constraints and approaches for preventing and reversing degradation. The book provides a contemporary, process-oriented perspective on rangeland degradation of value to students, policy-makers and professionals alike.

Book Greenhouse Coping with Climate Change

Download or read book Greenhouse Coping with Climate Change written by WJ Bouma and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 659 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consideration of climate change deals increasingly with impacts and responses, and therefore involves a wide range of technical issues and a diverse community of experts. One of the challenges faced is that of ensuring effective communication between these different areas of expertise. For example, climate change studies require new types of collaboration between carbon cycle modellers and economists, and between meteorologists and coastal geomorphologists. Furthermore, there is a need to distil balanced assessments ranging across many disciplines for the benefit of all policymakers.Greenhouse: Coping with Climate Change brings together the contributions of many experts to the climate change debate. This book is a landmark publication summarising our understanding of climate change issues as they affect Oceania. It contains review papers that report on the status of knowledge, methodologies and developments; and a selection of focused papers that expand on specific issues and present significant new developments of wide general interest and relevance to the region.
