Sacred Selves, Sacred Settings brings current social-religious topics into sharp focus: international scholars analyse, challenge, and apply Mol’s theoretical assertions. This book introduces the unique story of Hans Mol, who survived Nazi imprisonment and proceeded to brush shoulders with formidable intellectuals of the twentieth century, such as Robert Merton, Talcott Parsons, and Reinhold Niebuhr. Offering a fresh perspective on popular subjects such as secularization, pluralism, and the place of religion in the public sphere, this book sets case studies within an intellectual biography which describes Mol’s key influences and reveals the continuing import of Hans Mol’s work applied to recent data and within a contemporary context.

Book New Techniques and Technologies for Statistics II

Download or read book New Techniques and Technologies for Statistics II written by and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The compilation and deployment of statistical techniques is nowadays almost universally based on computing systems. Rapidly changing technology is expanding the options available for improving the quality, range and delivery of statistics whilst reducing the cost, and at the same time is putting pressure on producers and users to keep up with the latest techniques, both as management views develop of what is possible and simply through peer group pressure. In the areas of official statistics, it is clear that new technologies will change our approach to the whole range to activities from systems design, through data collection, processing, analysis and dissemination, to the structure of the European Statistical System and internal organization of national statistical institutes. Eurostat has a central role in promoting and coordinating the development and use of statistics in public administrations, which extends to the adoption of new techniques and technologies as they are proven validated. An important aspect of this role is to anticipate needs, to stimulate, encourage and fund research work of common interest, to support national initiatives and to prove a forum for discussion. In this new book techniques and technologies in statistics are described. The needs and constraints of official staticians are described as well as the latest developments of researchers. The book presents the research and development projects funded by the European Commission in the development of statistical tools and techniques under the R&D framework programme and the progress to date in the current Development of Statistical Information Systems (DOSIS) programme.

Book Theories of Local Economic Development

Download or read book Theories of Local Economic Development written by James E. Rowe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In economic development, theory and practice exist as two seemingly separate realities. Academics strive to develop or refine theory by drawing on abstract concepts about the way people behave and institutions work, while practitioners draw from a stock of experiences. By bringing together leading theorists and practitioners such as Blakely, Blair, McCann, Luger, Gunder, Stough and Stimson, this book provides the first comprehensive overview of local economic development theories for over fifteen years. It explores the theory behind the key concepts that every economic practitioner must understand and in doing so, ties together the various theories from across the disciplines to practice.

Book Home in the Islands

Download or read book Home in the Islands written by Jan Rensel and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1997-09-01 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ordinary houses have extraordinary stories to tell. For more than a century, anthropologists have been recording these sagas in an attempt to uncover humanity's relationship with the common dwelling. Fundamental to the interaction of humans and housing is the way people shape their living spaces, even redefining their purposes and meanings; their houses, in turn, influence how people live their lives and perpetuate the cultural structures that produced a given form of shelter. The stories draw attention to colonial and missionary agendas, local and global economies, environmental disasters, cultural identities, social connections, and family continuity, as well as personal choices. And, as the chapter on homeless Hawaiians shows, even those without houses have stories to tell. Anthropologists, architects, environmental designers, geographers, and historians will welcome this diverse volume on a neglected yet important aspect of change in the lives of Pacific Islanders.

Book Indigenous in the City

Download or read book Indigenous in the City written by Evelyn Peters and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2013-04-22 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on Indigenous issues rarely focuses on life in major metropolitan centres. Instead, there is a tendency to frame rural and remote locations as emblematic of authentic or “real” Indigeneity and as central to the survival of Indigenous cultures and societies. While such a perspective may support Indigenous struggles for territory and recognition as distinct peoples, it fails to account for large swaths of contemporary Indigenous realities, not the least of which is the increased presence of Indigenous people and communities in cities. The chapters in this volume explore the implications of urbanization on the production of distinctive Indigenous identities in Canada, the United States, New Zealand, and Australia. Instead of viewing urban experiences in terms of assimilation and social and cultural disruption, this book demonstrates the resilience, creativity, and complexity of the urban Indigenous presence, both in Canada and internationally.
