Book excerpt: Excerpt from Minutes of the Sandhills Baptist Association of North Carolina, 1959: Tenth Annual Session Held With Bethlehem Baptist Church, October 15, 1959, and Robbins Baptist Church, October 16, 1959 The Associational year, 1958-59, is now history. Pages written cannot be recalled; things recorded are in the past. If we failed to accomplish our highest aims, that is our mistake. Brotherhood work in our association has not progressed as we ah ticipated. Perhaps your president faltered in things that should have been undertaken. Let's not be discouraged even in the face of adverse circumstance and take courage from these words of Paul: Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, for getting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual of Sandy Run Baptist Association, North Carolina, 1991: One Hundred and Second Annual Session, Mission in Action Theme, Breakthrough; Teach the Bible to Win; Held With Corinth Baptist Church, Ellenboro, Nc, and First Baptist Church, Bostic, Nc His first two years of formal education were spent In a one -teacher school. Discipline was administered quickly and impartially by the teacher using a sweet gum switch about three feet long. He means she had a deformity of the left arm but had a super strong right arm. It took' two years for him to learn to read in this school. School consolidation occurred even in those days and his school was combined With another to form a new two-teacher school. This school was a three-mile walk from his home. The unpaved road had large water holes following heavy rains. He remembers having to help his younger brother and sister wade around and through these man -sized puddles on their way to and from school. L. W. Cain attended this two-teacher school for four years. His education progressed quicker here. One of the two teachers was a man, who he recalls as a good disciplinarian and avery good teacher. His father did not like the idea of his children having to walk three miles to school on a road that often provided wading ponds for them. The decision was made. The family bought a forty-acre farm near White Oak. His new home placed him near one of the best schools in Bladen County. Bethel Baptist Church, Friday Session, October 18, 1991, New Hope Baptist Church The Burnt Swamp Association is pleased to honor Rev. And Mrs. Vester Oxendine for a lifetime of Christian ministry for the Lord Jesus. Bro. Vester and Sis. Iuey were married in February of 1938. They are parents of two children, Flora Jane and Weaner. Rev. And Mrs. Oxendine reside at Rte. 1, Rowland. Rev. Vester began his preaching ministry in 1929 at the age of 15. His early years m pastoral ministry were spent with some very fine Freewill Baptist congregations. He was pastor of St. Annah, Fair Point, and Hickory Hill. All of these are churches in the conference of Freewill Baptist churches in Robeson County; During the days of Rev. L.' W. Jacobs, Bro. Vester came to work with churches in the Burnt Swamp Association. He has served the following churches in our Association: Dogwood, South Hoke, Pleasant View and Union. Bro. Vester was a favorite preacher to be called upon for revivals and regularly spoke at our Burnt Swamp Unions and Annual meetings. He served on several committees while active in ministry and also was -a member of the Board of-ministers for Campbell College for the nc. Baptist State Convention. We remember with fondness the days of his preaching strength. He was one of the most popular preachers among us all and remained in great demand until his retirement years. We are thankful for his commitment to our Lord Jesus and his gift of proclama tion that blessed so many of our people.
