Download or read book A Charitable Orthopathy written by John W. Morehead and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evangelicals and other conservative Christians of the twenty-first century face enormous challenges in the pluralistic public square, not least with Muslims and atheists. Contrary to biblical injunctions to "keep in step with the Spirit" (Gal 5:25b) and to love our neighbors as ourselves (e.g., Matt 22:37-40; Luke 10:25-37)--both of which involve not only behavioral but also important affective elements--we often harbor deep-seated antipathies toward atheists and adherents of other religions. While such feelings are at times justified and help us cope with conflict-related tragedies, they are also often baseless, misconstrued, and counterproductive, priming us to avoid religious others, support discriminatory policies against them, and even confront them in verbal or physical ways. The purpose of this volume is to offer an academically informed yet practically oriented collection of essays that challenges and encourages Christians to engage their religious neighbors in a much more loving, compassionate, hopeful, and courageous--indeed, orthopathic--manner, whether in the realm of politics, in debate and conference venues, on the mission field, or in their own homes, schools, churches, and neighborhoods. As such, a set of reflection and discussion questions is included to facilitate individual and/or group study.

Book That Famous Fig Leaf

    Book Details:
  • Author : Chad W. Thompson
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2019-10-29
  • ISBN : 1532659881
  • Pages : 118 pages

Download or read book That Famous Fig Leaf written by Chad W. Thompson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-10-29 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nothing that God created is the source of our human temptation. To the contrary! The human body is the crown of God's creation--consummated by his declaration that it was good. That God's people are unable to view the body without sinning is not an indictment of the body itself, but of the immaturity of the post-modern evangelical mind. We live in a culture whose inhabitants spend billions of dollars a year to see each other naked on internet sites and in pornographic films, yet are often uncomfortable changing in front of each other in locker rooms or even being seen in a swimsuit on the beach. Could it be that we have so profoundly fused the image of the exposed body with sexual gratification that there is no context left for it to be laid bare without evoking either shame or arousal? In That Famous Fig Leaf, Chad Thompson explores the spiritual implications of the physical body and, surprisingly, uncovers a new kind of freedom from sexual addiction along the way. Chad critiques the Christian purity movement for conflating purity with prudery, and reveals that changing how we esteem our bodies has the power to heal the hypersexualized body consciousness of our culture.

Book Two Can Play That Game

    Book Details:
  • Author : D. Eric Lowdermilk
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2016-12-22
  • ISBN : 1498208460
  • Pages : 332 pages

Download or read book Two Can Play That Game written by D. Eric Lowdermilk and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-12-22 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John 21 portrays seven disciples fishing all night yet catching nothing. In the morning, a shoreline stranger instructs them to recast their net. Surprisingly, the disciples fail to recognize him. After a miraculous catch and subsequent breakfast, however, there is no doubt as to who this stranger is. Jesus then questions Peter about his love and commissions him to feed Jesus' sheep. Using narrative criticism, Lowdermilk examines this recognition scene, asking, "How would a reader, well acquainted with recognition and deception as portrayed in Genesis, understand John 21?" He discards "trickster" terminology and argues that biblical recognition occurs within a context of "manipulation." After proposing a detailed taxonomy of manipulation, he ventures further and argues for patterns in Genesis where manipulators are "counter-manipulated" in a reciprocal manner, ironically similar to their own behavior, providing a transforming effect on the manipulator. These findings, plus a careful examination of Greek diminutives, inform Lowdermilk's new reading of John 21:1-19. Peter withholds his identity as a disciple in John 18 and later Jesus actively withholds his identity in ironic counter-manipulation, mirroring Peter's denials. Jesus' threefold questioning of Peter continues the haunting echoes of Peter's earlier denials. Will it result in a disciple transformed?
