Download or read book Stress and Somatic Symptoms written by Kyung Bong Koh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-22 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the assessment and treatment of patients with somatic symptoms, based on biopsychosociospiritual model. Specific assessment skills and treatment techniques are required to approach them effectively. A broad spectrum of knowledge about stress is also needed because stress is closely related to the onset and course of disorders with somatic symptoms. This book consists of four parts. Part 1 ‘Stress’ explores stress, vulnerability, and resilience; intermediate mechanisms between stress and illnesses such as psychoendocrinology and psychoimmunology; the measurement of stress; and the relationship between stress and accidents. Part 2 ‘Somatization’ deals with the concept, mechanisms, assessment, and treatment of somatization. In addition, somatic symptom and related disorders in DSM-5 is included. However, the approach to chronic pain is separately added to this part because pain is a major concern for patients with these disorders. Part 3 ‘Specific physical disorders’ mainly deals with common and distressing functional physical disorders as well as major physical disorders. Therapeutic approach for individuals at risk of coronary heart disease is also included. Part 4 ‘Religion, spirituality and psychosomatic medicine’ emphasizes the importance of a biopsychosociospiritual perspective in an approach for patients with somatic symptoms, especially depressed patients with physical diseases and patients with terminal illnesses because of the growing need for spirituality in such patients. This book explores stress and a variety of issues relevant to the assessment and treatment of disorders with somatic symptoms in terms of biopsychosociospiritiual perspectives. It will be of interest to researchers and healthcare practitioners dealing with stress, health and mental health.

Download or read book Mental Health Policy and Practice Today written by Ted R. Watkins and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 1997-02-26 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mental Health Policy and Practice Today is the only textbook available in recent years that reflects the dynamic nature of mental health practice in todayÆs rapidly changing society. This book begins with an overview of societal and cost issues related to mental health problems, including the formats now used for mental health delivery and the public planning and agencies involved. It then focuses on the expanding base of knowledge in mental health. Important areas of neuroscientific and social research are covered, along with the significant contributions of pychoeducation and self-help and advocacy groups. Ten groups are specifically discussed including the homeless, whose numbers have risen to crisis proportions in recent years in part due to their mass expulsion from institutional care. It then guides the reader through implications for the 21st century, including the influences of technology and funding shifts to managed care. Finally it concludes with an exploration of issues that will need to be resolved based on the analysis of current policy, practice, and future projections. Readers will appreciate the multiple perspectives of this book and the blending of contributorsÆ expertise in both research and service "in the trenches." The broad spectrum of topics covered makes this book not only an effective text for traditional and specialized courses in the mental health professions, but also an informative and stimulating resource for the current practitioner. It is an essential, timely book that illustrates that policy and practice in the mental health fields must be reconciled.

Book excerpt: The new edition of this critically praised textbook continues to provide the most comprehensive overview of the concepts, methods, and research advances in the field; particularly the application of molecular genomics and of neuroimaging. It has been revised and enhanced to capitalize on the strengths of the first and second editions while keeping it up-to-date with the field of psychiatry and epidemiology. This comprehensive publication now includes chapters on experimental epidemiology, gene-environment interactions, the use of case registries, eating disorders, suicide, childhood disorders and immigrant populations, and the epidemiology of a number of childhood disorders. As in the first and second editions, the objective is to provide a comprehensive, easy to understand overview of research methods for the non-specialist. The book is ideal for students of psychiatric epidemiology, psychiatric residents, general psychiatrists, and other mental health professionals. The book features a new editor, Peter Jones, from the University of Cambridge, who joins the successful US team of Ming Tsuang and Mauricio Tohen.
