In addition to the change in document series, the statistics provided in this report have been presented in an entirely new format. Data on New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island rivers are listed separately and in a format distinct from those on Nova Scotia rivers. The data incorporated in the tables dealing with New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island were provided by Fisheries and Oceans field officers for most rivers and by New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources regional biologists for the main stem of the Saint John River and the Nashwaak. The angling data for Nova Scotia rivers was provided by Atlantic salmon sport fishermen via their license stubs."--Document.

Book excerpt: At present fishing for salmon in Norwegian home water is carried out with drift nets, bag nets, bend nets, lift nets and stake nets in the sea, and mainly by rods in the rivers. Catch statistics have been collected since 1876, but reliability of the statistics is questionable. The rates of exploitation on many Norwegian salmon stocks are very high, and data are presented and discussed for River Laerdal, River Eira and River Imsa stocks. As a result of this heavy exploitation with nets, the frequency of net-marked salmon entering rivers is high especially for griIse, although most net-marked salmon are only slightly damaged. It is suggested that mortality of salmon that are net-damaged hear or in brackish water is relatively small compared with salmon that escape from nets on the high seas. Book excerpt: Two events have recently improved the prospects of protecting fish and their environment in Switzerland: the acceptance of a new Federal Water Protection Law in the plebiscite of May 17th 1992, and the new Federal Legislation on Fisheries, in force since January 1st 1994. With this legal framework, the possibilities for protection of nature and landscape have now considerably improved in Switzerland. The most important aims of the Federal Law on Water Protection are to safeguard the natural habitats of the native flora and fauna and water as the habitat of aquatic organisms. This includes not only the preservation or restoration of water quality in lakes and rivers, but also, in rivers used for hydroelectricity, irrigation or as industrial or other water supplies, the maintenance of sufficient water to fulfill the minimal requirements for fish. However, good quality water in sufficient quan tities alone is not enough to guarantee the survival of fish. Intact fish habitats comprise various phYsical structures including plenty of hiding places, hunting grounds, reproduction and nursery areas within suitable distances from each other. This third aspect of conservation and restoration of aquatic habitats is a central point in the new Federal Law on Fisheries. Whereas the former versions of this law were more concerned with fishery regulations, the recent legislation defines new areas of responsibility for the federal and the cantonal governments.
