Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bureau, precursor to Statistics Canada, was founded in 1918 as a centralized national agency to replace piecemeal arrangements which had developed over time and no longer satisfied statistical needs. The author (who is a retired assistant chief statistician of Canada) traces its evolution and looks at the individuals who influenced it. He discusses how Canada's statistical system has coped with the country's evolution from a staple economy to a mature industrial power; the changing nature of the technology for gathering, compiling, analyzing, and disseminating information; and some notable Canadian contributions to the science and production of statistics. Download or read book Northern Ontario in Historical Statistics 1871 2021 written by David Leadbeater and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 2024-09-17 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on original historical tables, Northern Ontario in Historical Statistics, 1871–2021 offers an overview of major long-term population, social composition, employment, and urban concentration trends over 150 years in the region now called “Northern Ontario” (or “Nord de l’Ontario”). David Leadbeater and his collaborators compare Northern Ontario relative to Southern Ontario, as well as detail changes at the district and local levels. They also examine the employment population rate, unemployment, economic dependency, and income distribution, particularly over recent decades of decline since the 1970s. Although deeply experienced by Indigenous peoples, the settler-colonial structure of Northern Ontario’s development plays little explicit analytical role in official government discussions and policy. Northern Ontario in Historical Statistics, 1871–2021, therefore, aims to provide context for the long-standing hinterland colonial question: How do ownership, control, and use of the land and its resources benefit the people who live there? Leadbeater and his collaborators pay special attention to foundational conditions in Northern Ontario’s hinterland-colonial development including Indigenous relative to settler populations, treaty and reserve areas, and provincially controlled “unorganized territories.” Colonial biases in Canadian censuses are discussed critically as a contribution towards decolonizing changes in official statistics.

Download or read book The Black Prairie Archives written by Karina Vernon and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2020-02-19 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Black Prairie Archives: An Anthology recovers a new regional archive of “black prairie” literature, and includes writing that ranges from work by nineteenth-century black fur traders and pioneers, all of it published here for the first time, to contemporary writing of the twenty-first century. This anthology establishes a new black prairie literary tradition and transforms inherited understandings of what prairie literature looks and sounds like. It collects varied and unique work by writers who were both conscious and unconscious of themselves as black writers or as “prairie” people. Their letters, recipes, oral literature, autobiographies, rap, and poetry- provide vivid glimpses into the reality of their lived experiences and give meaning to them. The book includes introductory notes for each writer in non-specialist language, and notes to assist readers in their engagement with the literature. This archive and its supporting text offer new scholarly and pedagogical possibilities by expanding the nation’s and the region’s archives. They enrich our understanding of black Canada by bringing to light the prairies' black histories, cultures, and presences.
