Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The Light and Space movement—of great importance to my development as a young artist—is far more than a valid art historical reference. It translates matters of psychology, phenomenology, criticality, emotional investment, and now-ness into an immaterial language that is both subversive and compelling. Light and Space is as contemporary as ever.” —Olafur Eliasson

Download or read book Harvey Quaytman written by Apsara DiQuinzio and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2018-10-23 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harvey Quaytman’s paintings are distinct for their inventive, whimsical exploration of shape, meticulous attention to surface texture, and experimental application of color. While his works display a rigorous commitment to formalism, they are simultaneously invested with rich undertones of sensuality, decorativeness, and humor—expressed, too, in his playful poetic titles, such as A Street Called Straight and Kufikind. Demonstrating the arc of Quaytman’s oeuvre, from his radically curvilinear canvases of the late 1960s and 1970s, to his exploration of serialized geometric abstraction in the 1980s, and finally to his serene cruciform canvases of the 1990s, this retrospective exhibition and accompanying illustrated catalogue is a timely reconsideration of Quaytman’s influential work, placing him and his work more prominently in the trajectory of American modern art. With contributions by Suzanne Hudson and John Yau, as well reflections by R. H. Quaytman, an artist and the daughter of Harvey Quaytman, on her father’s work and life. Published in association with the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA). Exhibition dates: October 17, 2018–January 27, 2019, Berkeley Museum of Art Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA).

Book Productive failure

  • Author : Alpesh Kantilal Patel
  • Publisher : Manchester University Press
  • Release : 2017-07-21

Download or read book Productive failure written by Alpesh Kantilal Patel and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2017-07-21 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title sets out to write new transnational South Asian art histories - to make visible histories of artworks that remain marginalised within the discipline of art history. However, this is done through a deliberate 'productive failure' - specifically, by not upholding the strictly genealogical approach that is regularly assumed for South Asian art histories. For instance, one chapter explores the abstract work of Cy Twombly and Natvar Bhavsar. The author examines 'whiteness', the invisible ground upon which racialized art histories often pivot, as a fraught yet productive site for writing art history. This book also provides original commentary on how queer theory can deconstruct and provide new approaches for writing art history. Overall, this title provides methods for generating art history that acknowledge the complex web of factors within which art history is produced and the different forms of knowledge-production we might count as art history.

Book Time Dust James Rosenquist

Download or read book Time Dust James Rosenquist written by Constance White Glenn and published by Rizzoli International Publications. This book was released on 1993 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Rosenquist is an internationally renowned artist who first achieved wide recognition as a result of his pioneering contributions to Pop Art in the 1960s and 1970s. Like many artists of his circle, particularly Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, Rosenquist has been fascinated with the visual language and ephemera of mass-reproduction. In Rosenquist's case, his interest was manifested in an art derived from popular imagery sources yet committed to the expression of his personal concerns as an artist and a printmaker. He has tested the limits of the medium in order to achieve, on the one hand, subtle nuances unique to particular techniques, and, on the other, the vast billboard scale that is his signature style. This book traces Rosenquist's entire career, from his early work as a sign painter to the creation of what is thought to be the world's largest print, Time Dust, completed in 1992. An important historical text by Constance Glenn explores such contemporary issues as the role of the mass-media, the appropriation of its techniques and imagery, and the origin and demand for multiple images, as well as presenting in depth the artist's evolution as painter and printmaker. The 150 colorplates include - in addition to landmark paintings - numerous examples of previously unpublished sketches and prints, as well as many of Rosenquist's famous works, such as the great installation print F-111. The book includes a catalogue raisonne of the artist's 229 prints and an extensive bibliography.
