Download or read book The AFCRL Flying Thread Loom Process for Improved Scrim Reinforced Balloon Materials written by Arthur O. Korn and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cost of reliable, scrim-reinforced balloon materials has been substantially reduced through use of the AFCRL Flying Thread Loom (FTL). This versatile machine promises to extend the present capabilities of scientific ballooning by providing improved lightweight materials for extreme altitudes and thin films of unusual strengths for extra-heavy payloads. The principle of operation is described and results of flight tests using two new FTL materials are reported. Savings in cost and in balloon -volume requirements are demonstrated by charts. Future plans include addition of a gore-cutting and tailoring device and a card-input control mechanism. (Author).
Download or read book A Balloon Design for 9000 Pounds at 90 000 Feet written by James F. Dwyer and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the development of free balloons to carry heavy payloads into the stratosphere is reviewed with the objective of developing a design based on existing technologies for a balloon to carry 9000 lb to 90,000 ft. Reinforced polyester balloons, in tandem balloon configurations, are discussed with respect to materials, design criteria, and performance. The problem of launch dynamics for single cell polyethylene balloons is also discussed and it is concluded that a capped single cell polyethylene balloon can be dynamically launched, successfully, with the 9000-lb payload. Further, it is concluded that the single cell polyethylene balloon is the best means to meet the objective. Specifications for such a balloon are provided.
