Book Printed Advertisement 1947 1970

Download or read book Printed Advertisement 1947 1970 written by Chilka Ghosh and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-11-10 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work explains the politics of the patterns of the advertisements printed in the newspapers published in Bengal between 1947 and 1970, and the sociology of the encounter of the Bengali middleclass with these. Many of the cited advertisements were meant for the entire country but regional particularities were pronounced during the period under review, and the bhadralok consciously maintained a unique constructed identity that dates back to the colonial epoch. Therefore, their encounter with these advertisements too had regional peculiarities. The advertising texts of this period frequently referred to nationalism, tradition and work ethics, and were remarkably sober and controlled, compared to modern advertisements. Nevertheless, they contrived to reiterate the existing and emerging desires of probable consumers. The idiom of those advertisements prescribed a lifestyle and consumption pattern for the most volatile class, ready to satisfy their desires, if only symbolically, through consumption, and prepared the ground for present-day advertisements. The language was restrained only because the market culture was still weak then, and some traditional values had persisted, among the probable consumers, because of the objective conditions. But even without those advertisements, such traditional values would not have been perpetual, though present-day advertisements would have to grope for a language required to encourage consumerism.

Book Estimation of Interstate Migration in Peninsular Malaysia 1947 1970

Download or read book Estimation of Interstate Migration in Peninsular Malaysia 1947 1970 written by Saw Swee-Hock and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 1980 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper begins by discussing the principal concepts and definitions used in the study of internal migration. The direct method of estimating internal migration based on the record of the change of residence is reviewed, while the three indirect methods known as the vital statistics method, the survival rate method, and the place of birth method are evaluated in somewhat more detail. The place of birth method was selected to compute the lifetime migration of the eleven states in Peninsular Malaysia in the three post-war census years - 1947, 1957, 1970 - and the interstate migration during the two intercensal periods - 1947-57 and 1957-70. The results of the estimation reveal that, apart from the pronounced differences in the level of interstate migration among the eleven states, there have been significant shifts in the pattern of interstate migration during the post-war years.

Book excerpt: In this second edition of his bestselling book, author Art Kleiner explores the nature of effective leadership in times of change and defines its importance to the corporation of the future. He describes a heretic as a visionary who creates change in large-scale companies, balancing the contrary truths they can’t deny against their loyalty to their organizations. The Age of Heretics reveals how managers can get stuck in counterproductive ways of doing things and shows why it takes a heretical point of view to get past the deadlock and move forward.

Book Botvinnik s Best Games 1947 1970

Download or read book Botvinnik s Best Games 1947 1970 written by Mikhail Botvinnik and published by Ishi Press. This book was released on 2012-10 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mikhail Botvinnik won the World Chess Championship in 1948 and held the title with two breaks until 1963. Botvinnik announced his retirement from chess in 1970. This book covers the entire period when Botvinnik waa World Chess Champion. Of the great postwar chess players, one figure stands out above all others - the Soviet grandmaster, Mikhail Botvinnik. With the exception of two one-year interludes this dedicated electrical engineer was world champion for fifteen years - from 1948 to 1963; on the second occasion that he regained his title - from Tal - he was in his fiftieth year. It was not, however, until 1970 that he announced his "official retirement" from international competition. "Chess." wrote Botvinnik, "is an art which illustrates the beauty of logic." He could not abide errors which spoiled the beauty of the game, and the secret of his success was thorough preparation and routine, which fully justified his own self-confidence - and which were systematically adopted by the Soviet school. In controlled positional play, Botvinnik was an incomparable virtuoso - as Bronstein, Smyslov, and Tal, among many others, discovered. Above all, he was a perfectionist. Prefaced by a short biography, this volume - the first ever published in English presents over 100 of Botvinnik's best games over the period 1947 to 1970. Nearly all the annotations are by Botvinnik himself, and they reveal the qualities that won him the champion's title. Botvinnik's Best Games is, perhaps, the outstanding collection of the decade.

Book East Central European Migrations During the Cold War

Download or read book East Central European Migrations During the Cold War written by Anna Mazurkiewicz and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-05-06 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An extremely useful and much needed survey. Over eleven chapters, authors from eight countries cover the complex history of migration from the perspective of Central and Eastern Europe between 1945 and 1993. Following in the footsteps of Klaus Bade’s Encyclopedia of European Migrations, the authors make extensive use of sources in national languages, while providing an extensive overview of population movements in the region between the Baltic, Black, and Adriatic Seas. The individual chapters shed light on phenomena overlooked in other volumes, including individual state reactions to various migratory phenomenon, and the political, economic, and ideological consequences of human movement. The chapters of this volume are uniform not only in their informative nature, but also in suggesting new pathways for in-depth research." Adam Walaszek, Jagiellonian University, Kraków, Poland "Eastern Europe is an emblematic space of mobility and its Cold War history cannot be told without considering migration from and into the countries of the region. This volume comes at a timely moment and provides a uniquely comprehensive account, full with useful information for further research. It will be a must-read both for migration studies scholars and for area specialists." Ulf Brunnbauer, Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies, Regensburg, Germany "The Handbook is a gift to students of migration on three counts. It gathers the expertise of scholars fluent in the languages – and familiar with the archives – of Eastern and Central Europe. Thus it brings the multi-layered and complex histories of movement beyond the flat descriptor of "Soviet bloc" or Eastern European migrations. The Handbook is both rich and lucid, presenting in-depth materials on the European twentieth-century, on one hand, and organizing each chapter in a similar way, offering the reader transparently comparable histories. From Estonia south to Albania, and from the USSR west to the GDR, each chapter elucidates a complex migration history distinguished by national politics, ethnic composition, and economics – moving from the cataclysmic impacts of World War II to the international migrations and politics of Cold War movement, as well as the politics of Cold War emigrants themselves. Each chapter ends with an epilogue on post-1989 international migrations and a valuable addendum on published and archival sources. Finally, the Handbook models the kind of high quality work produced by international scholarly cooperation at its best."
