This book was released on 2024-09-30 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, we revisit the teachers, students and their families who helped shape the landscape of Calvin Coolidge High School in Washington D.C., from 1941 through 1970. It was and still is a school grounded in history and chronicles the ups and downs of living in the nation’s capital. The story unfurls over decades of war and peace, civil rights, voting rights, the end of segregation, and the assassinations of public figures, including a president. After the school was renovated in 1991, Edward Waters (class of 1943) and William Glew (class of 1945), took us on a virtual tour of Coolidge that ended in a garden behind the school, where a plaque is mounted on the Greenhouse building in memory of ten Coolidge boys who died during World War 11.

Download or read book Lisbon written by Ruth Gerrard Cole and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Centered in the midst of the Columbiana County hills, Lisbon was founded in 1803. High hopes for growth and prosperity were first realized through industries producing iron, coal, and pottery; however, even with modern inventions, fascinating people, and hopes for a successful canal, the dream of becoming a city never materialized. During the Civil War, Confederate general John Hunt Morgan and his raiders threatened the community with invasion, but he ultimately surrendered to Union forces. Many political careers had links to Lisbon, including those of Congressman and Copperhead Clement Vallandigham, Sen. Marcus Hanna, Pres. William McKinley, and Associate Justice of the Supreme Court John Clarke. Intriguing families such as the "Fighting McCooks" added to the community's history. Victorian homes abound, and today effort is put into the restoration of other Lisbon homes as well as businesses, creating genuine charm and interest while commercial and industrial progress stretches northward.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: West Point is a geographical location that was of critical importance during the Revolutionary War, the site of our nations first military academy, and the commissioning source of thousands of Army, Army Air Corps, Air Force, and even some Navy and Marine Corps officers who have led our nations young men, and now women, in battle since the Academys founding on March 16, 1802 by President Thomas Jefferson. This volume contains a very selective military history of the United States that focuses on the Revolutionary War and the contributions of West Point graduates to subsequent wars, but with an emphasis on some of the lesser known persons and events of the past 250 years or so. It also touches upon many of the customs and traditions of the West Point experience. Many chapters include the stories of unsung or forgotten heroes and heroines. Men like John Stark, Daniel Morgan, Eleazer Derby Wood, Benjamin L.E. Bonneville, Oliver Otis Howard, Henry Ossian Flipper, Calvin Pearl Titus, Charles Young, Norman D. Cota, and Donald W. Holleder plus women like the Warner sisters, Laura Walker, and Emily Perez. One of the final chapters, however, deals within the kindest sense of the terma few rogues of West Point like Edgar Allan Poe, James McNeil Whistler, Hugh S. Johnson, and The Mole.

Book excerpt: Purdue University has played a leading role in providing the engineers who designed, built, tested, and flew the many aircraft and spacecraft that so changed human progress during the 20th century. It is estimated that Purdue has awarded 6% of all BS degrees in aerospace engineering, and 7% of all PhDs in the United States during the past 65 years. The University's alumni have led significant advances in research and development of aerospace technology, have headed major aerospace corporations and government agencies, and have established an amazing record for exploration of space. More than one third of all US manned space flights have had at least one crew member who was a Purdue engineering graduate (including the first and last men to step foot on the moon). The School of Aeronautics & Astronautics was founded as a separate school within the College of Engineering at Purdue University in 1945. The first edition of this book was published in 1995, at the time of the school's 50th anniversary. This corrected and expanded second edition brings the school's illustrious history up to date, and looks to Purdue's future in the sky and in space.
