Book Asians and Pacific Islanders in American Football

Download or read book Asians and Pacific Islanders in American Football written by Joel S. Franks and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sheds light on experiences relatively underrepresented in academic and non-academic sport history. It examines how Asian and Pacific Islander peoples used American football to maintain a sense of community while encountering racial exclusion, labor exploitation, and colonialism. Through their participation and spectatorship in American football, Asian and Pacific Islander people crossed treacherous cultural frontiers to construct what sociologist Elijah Anderson has called a cosmopolitan canopy under which Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, and people of diverse racial and ethnic identities interacted with at least a semblance of respect and equity. And perhaps a surprising number of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have excelled in college and even professional football before the 1960s. Finally, acknowledging the impressive influx of elite Pacific Islander gridders who surfaced in the late twentieth and early twenty-first century, it is vital to note as well the racialized nativism shadowing the lives of these athletes.

Download or read book Before Brittney written by Dr. Nancy R. Goodloe and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2014-02-13 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about champions in women’s athletics at Baylor University–the champions who competed, the champions who coached, the champions who provided the advocacy and leadership for the women’s athletic program, and the champions who have brought Baylor’s women’s athletic program to the national prominence it enjoys in 2012. It’s also about the champions in women’s intercollegiate athletics whose struggles to attain national recognition and implement national championships for women endured from the 1930s through the 1970s. These champions fought hard to retain the early values of sport for women and provided strong leadership through the AIAW until the day they lost their battle with the NCAA for control of women’s intercollegiate athletics. When did women’s athletic opportunities begin at Baylor University? Who were the Baylor Bearettes? Who were the early leaders in women’s athletics at Baylor, the coaches, the players? Through the lenses of those who were there (including the author), those who played, those who advocated for women’s equity, and those who made it happen, these questions are answered in this book. For the first time the story is told of the Baylor women’s sports program and its rise to national prominence.

Download or read book Dissent on the Margins written by Emily B. Baran and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2014 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emily B. Baran offers a gripping history of how a small, American-based religious community, the Jehovah's Witnesses, found its way into the Soviet Union after World War II, survived decades of brutal persecution, and emerged as one of the region's fastest growing religions after the Soviet Union's collapse in 1991. In telling the story of this often misunderstood faith, Baran explores the shifting boundaries of religious dissent, non-conformity, and human rights in the Soviet Union and its successor states. Soviet Jehovah's Witnesses are a fascinating case study of dissent beyond urban, intellectual nonconformists. Witnesses, who were generally rural, poorly educated, and utterly marginalized from society, resisted state pressure to conform. They instead constructed alternative communities based on adherence to religious principles established by the Witnesses' international center in Brooklyn, New York. The Soviet state considered Witnesses to be the most reactionary of all underground religious movements, and used extraordinary measures to try to eliminate this threat. Yet Witnesses survived, while the Soviet system did not. After 1991, they faced continuing challenges to their right to practice their faith in post-Soviet states, as these states struggled to reconcile the proper limits on freedom of conscience with European norms and domestic concerns. Dissent on the Margins provides a new and important perspective on one of America's most understudied religious movements.
