Book Georges Braque and the Cubist Still Life 1928 1945

Download or read book Georges Braque and the Cubist Still Life 1928 1945 written by Karen K. Butler and published by Prestel Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This examination of Braque's career features exquisite reproductions and incisive historical and aesthetic investigations of his work leading up to and during World War II. This book offers the first detailed examination of Braque's experiments with still lifes and interiors during a significant, though overlooked, time in his career. One of the leading founders of Cubism, Braque employed the genre of the still life to conduct a lifelong investigation into the nature of perception through the tactile and transitory world of everyday objects. Examining a transitional time between Braque's early Cubist works and his late grand series, this catalog considers his paintings within the cultural and political context of Europe at this time. Reproduced in vivid color, Braque's paintings are accompanied by scholarly essays that explore the rise of Braque's popularity in the US, including his first major retrospective in America, and the reception of his work of the early 1930s and 1940s by German and French critics, as well as a behind-the-scenes look at the materials and process employed by the artist as illuminated by an intensive conservation study of select important works.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born during the Great Depression and World War Two (1929–1945) an entire generation has slipped between the cracks of history. These Lucky Few became the first American generation smaller than the one before them, and the luckiest generation of Americans ever. As children they experienced the most stable intact parental families in the nation’s history. Lucky Few women married earlier than any other generation of the century and helped give birth to the Baby Boom, yet also gained in education compared to earlier generations. Lucky Few men made the greatest gains of the century in schooling, earned veterans benefits like the Greatest Generation but served mostly in peacetime with only a fraction of the casualties, came closest to full employment, and spearheaded the trend toward earlier retirement. Even in retirement/old age the Lucky Few remain in the right place at the right time. Here is their story, and the story of how they have affected other recent generations of Americans before and since.

Book A Further Record

Download or read book A Further Record written by Peter Demianovich Ouspensky and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MR. O. Recurrence is in eternity. It is not the same life. This life ends and time ends. There is a theory—and this system admits this theory—that time can be prolonged. I have no evidence. If you think about time, how many attempts were made by spiritualists and others—but there is no evidence. The study of recurrence must begin with the study of children’s minds, and particularly before they begin to speak. If they could remember this time they could remember very interesting things. But unfortunately, when they begin to speak they become real children and they forget after six months or a year. It is very seldom that people remember what they thought before that, at a very early age. They would remember themselves such as they were grown-up. They are not children at all. Then later they become children. If they remember their mentality it is the same mentality as grown-up people have. That is what is interesting. Q. Do you know why a child should remember its grown-up mind and not its previous child’s mind? MR. O. We have so little material to judge about it. I speak only about the way it can be studied. Suppose we try to remember our own—suppose we find it was one or another— trying not to let imagination come in—if we find something, that would be material. In literature you find very little, because people don’t understand how to study it. But with my own experience, I met with some very interesting things. Some people I knew had very interesting recollections of first years of life, and they all had the same impression, which was that the mentality was not a child’s mentality—how they took people, how they recognized people—it was not a child’s psychology. But most people don’t remember that at all. You see what I mean. They had a ready mind, such that you cannot imagine this ready mind with quite grown-up reactions could be formed in six months of unconscious life. It had to be before if it is really so, but as I say, it is very difficult to find material.

Book The Origins of the Arab Israeli Wars

Download or read book The Origins of the Arab Israeli Wars written by Ritchie Ovendale and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-10-23 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly-regarded history gives a balanced and judicious introduction to this immensely complex and controversial subject, weaving different strands of the story into a single coherent narrative, thus making it essential reading for all students studying conflict in the Middle East. Of all the troubles affecting the modern world few are as topical, deep rooted and intractable as the Arab-Israeli conflict. For this region, an understanding of the past is vital to an understanding of the present. Ritchie Ovendale’s classic study of the roots of the conflict is now updated for a fourth time and considers events until 2003.
