Book The Western Delaware Indian Nation 1730 1795

Download or read book The Western Delaware Indian Nation 1730 1795 written by Richard S. Grimes and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the early eighteenth century, three phratries or tribes (Turtle, Turkey, and Wolf) of Delaware Indians left their traditional homeland in the Delaware River watershed and moved west to the Allegheny Valley of western Pennsylvania and eventually across the Ohio River into the Muskingum River valley. As newcomers to the colonial American borderlands, these bands of Delawares detached themselves from their past in the east, developed a sense of common cause, and created for themselves a new regional identity in western Pennsylvania. The Western Delaware Indian Nation, 1730-1795: Warriors and Diplomats is a case study of the western Delaware Indian experience, offering critical insight into the dynamics of Native American migrations to new environments and the process of reconstructing social and political systems to adjust to new circumstances. The Ohio backcountry brought to center stage the masculine activities of hunting, trade, war-making, diplomacy and was instrumental in the transformation of Delaware society and with that change, the advance of a western Delaware nation. This nation, however, was forged in a time of insecurity as it faced the turmoil of imperial conflict during the Seven Years' War and the backcountry racial violence brought about by the American Revolution. The stress of factionalism in the council house among Delaware leaders such as Tamaqua, White Eyes, Killbuck, and Captain Pipe constantly undermined the stability of a lasting political western Delaware nation. This narrative of western Delaware nationhood is a story of the fight for independence and regional unity and the futile effort to create and maintain an enduring nation. In the end the western Delaware nation became fragmented and forced as in the past, to journey west in search of a new beginning. The Western Delaware Indian Nation, 1730-1795: Warriors and Diplomats is an account of an Indian people and their dramatic and arduous struggle for autonomy, identity, political union, and a permanent homeland.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kickapoo Indians, members of the Algonquian linguistic community, resisted white settlement for more than three hundred years on a front that extended across half a continent. In turn, France, Great Britain, the United States, Spain, and Mexico sought to placate and exploit this fiercely independent people. Eventually forced to remove from their historic homeland to territory west of the Mississippi River, the Kickapoos carried their battle to the plains of the Southwest. Here not only did they wage active and imaginative war, but certain bands became area merchants, acting as middlemen between the Comanche and Kiowa Indians and the United States government. They developed a flourishing trade in plunder and stolen livestock, but their most lucrative "goods" were the white captives whom they obtained from the Comanches and others. In 1873, after several profitable years of raiding in Texas for the Mexican Republic, the Kickapoos reluctantly settled on a reservation in Indian Territory. Corrupt politicians, land swindlers, gamblers, and whisky peddlers preyed on the tribe, and it was not until the twentieth century that the Kickapoos received just treatment at the hands of the United States government.

Book excerpt: It is 1742, and a penniless twenty-year-old arrives in the Northwest Territory. A wild man in the midst of a wild country, George Croghan is the first trader to venture deep into French territory, startling the Seneca Indians with his courage. As he enters a village on the Cuyahoga carrying a variety of goods on his horses, he soon wins over the Indians with his entertaining Irish stories and easygoing, friendly manner. Instead of killing him, the Senecas build him a trading cabin inside their village where he soon becomes immersed in their daily lives and struggles. Now a part of the tribe, Croghan summons the help of the Hurons, Miamis, and the Senecas, to drive the French traders out of their territory. As the chaos of the French and Indian War swirls around him, Croghan strategizes with the Indians and takes an incredible personal journey that eventually leads to the Massacre at Fort Dearborn in 1812. Croghans War weaves genuine history around a compelling tale rich in Indian culture, a family tragedy, and a fierce battle that decided the fate of its innocent victims.
