Book excerpt: Skylar Conrad, a translator, is at the Yellowstone airport waiting for Alex, her engineer boyfriend to deboard his flight from Brazil. Just as she realizes he's a no-show, she spots the last deboarding passenger, a man holding a sign with her name on it. Chris "Hawke" Hawkins has bad news for Skylar, a woman he has never even met. Her boyfriend is marrying someone else. A coworker of Alex, Hawke can't stand the idea of Skylar waiting for a man who doesn't deserve her. His solution? Tell Skylar the truth himself since he's already flying home to spend Christmas with his foster parents. Cody is just a little side trip and well worth it if he can do the right thing. In a way, Skylar isn't surprised that Alex hasn't come. He'd stopped all communication back in October until he sent her flight details for their meet-up. What does surprise her is the fact that there are still men as honorable as Hawke on the planet. It turns out Skylar and Hawke are both from Jackson. As payback for his trouble, Skylar offers him a ride home, a trip of four hours. But outside the airport, snow is accumulating at a crazy rate. An icy weather front that was supposed to be moving through the state has stalled. Skylar is so comfortable with Hawke that she blurts a Plan B: use the reservation she made for herself and Alex at a hotel near the airport. It's for a double room, which is perfect. Or not. Skylar has known Hawke less than an hour and, based on her experience with Alex, she's no judge of character. Luckily there's a psychic ability that helps with that...if she only knew she had it. Can the Rutledge Institute, a school for psychics in Jackson, help her with that?

Book Taking Stock of Global Democratic Trends Before and During the COVID 19 Pandemic

Download or read book Taking Stock of Global Democratic Trends Before and During the COVID 19 Pandemic written by International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance and published by International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA). This book was released on 2021-02-04 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This GSoD In Focus provides a brief overview of the global state of democracy at the end of 2019, prior to the outbreak of the pandemic, and assesses some of the preliminary impacts that the pandemic has had on democracy globally in 2020. Key findings include: · To address the COVID-19 pandemic, starting in March 2020, more than half the countries in the world (59 per cent) had declared a national state of emergency (SoE), enabling them to take drastic temporary (and in most cases necessary) measures to fight the pandemic. These measures have included in most cases temporarily curbing basic civil liberties, such as freedom of assembly and movement, and in some cases postponing elections. · International IDEA’s Global Monitor of COVID-19’s Impact on Democracy and Human Rights finds that more than half the countries in the world (61 per cent) had, by the end of November 2020, implemented measures to curb COVID-19 that were concerning from a democracy and human rights perspective. These violated democratic standards because they were either disproportionate, illegal, indefinite or unnecessary in relation to the health threat. · Concerning developments have been more common in countries that were already non-democratic prior to the pandemic (90 per cent) and less common, although still quite widespread, in democracies (43 per cent). · The democracies that have implemented democratically concerning measures are those that were already ailing before the pandemic. More than two-thirds were democracies that were either backsliding, eroding or weak prior to the pandemic. · Almost a year since the first outbreak of COVID-19, the pandemic seems to have deepened autocratization in most of the countries that were already non-democratic. However, in at least 3 of those countries (Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Thailand), the pandemic has also tapped into existing simmering citizen discontent and may have been the tipping point in unleashing massive protest waves demanding democratic reform. The pandemic has also seemingly deepened democratic backsliding processes and exposed the democratic weakness and fragility of new or re-transitioned democracies (Malaysia, Mali, Myanmar, Sri Lanka). In a few cases, the pandemic has also exposed countries that showed no apparent sign of democratically ailing prior to the pandemic, but where concerning democratic developments have occurred during the pandemic and which risk seeing a significant deterioration in their democratic quality as a result (i.e. Argentina, El Salvador). · The aspects of democracy that have seen the most concerning developments during the pandemic are freedom of expression, media integrity, and personal integrity and security. However, the freedoms that have been restricted across most countries are freedom of movement and assembly. Another core democratic process that has been heavily affected by the pandemic is the electoral, with half the elections scheduled between February and December 2020 postponed due to the pandemic. · The pandemic has also shown democracy’s resilience and capacity for renovation. Innovation through accelerated digitalization has occurred across most regions of the world. And democratic institutions, such as parliaments, courts, electoral commissions, political parties, media and civil society actors, have fought back against attempts at executive overreach and democratic trampling or collaborated to ensure effective responses to the pandemic. The review of the state of democracy during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 uses qualitative analysis and data of events and trends collected through International IDEA’s Global Monitor of COVID-19’s Impact on Democracy and Human Rights, an initiative co-funded by the European Union.

Book Silent Invasion

Download or read book Silent Invasion written by Deborah Birx and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2022-04-26 with total page 675 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The most revealing pandemic book yet."—The Atlantic The definitive, inside account of the Trump Administration’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic from White House Coronavirus Response Coordinator and Coronavirus Task Force member, Dr. Deborah Birx. In late February 2020, Dr. Deborah Birx—a lifelong federal health official who had worked at the CDC, the State Department, and the US Army across multiple presidential administrations—was asked to join the Trump White House Coronavirus Task Force and assist the already faltering federal response to the Covid-19 pandemic. For weeks, she’d been raising the alarm behind the scenes about what she saw happening in public—from the apparent lack of urgency at the White House to the routine downplaying of the risks to Americans. Once in the White House, she was tasked with helping fix the broken federal approach and making President Trump see the danger this virus posed to all of us. Silent Invasion is the story of what she witnessed and lived for the next year—an eye-opening, inside account, detailed here for the first time, of the Trump Administration’s response to the greatest public health crisis in modern times. Regarded with suspicion in the West Wing from day one, Dr. Birx goes beyond the media speculation and political maneuvering to show what she was really up against in the Trump White House. Digging into the hard-fought victories, the costly mistakes, and the human drama surrounding the administration’s efforts, she examines the forces that crippled efforts to control the virus and explores why these blunders continue to haunt us today. And yet amid the agonizing missteps were bright spots that point the way forward—the fastest vaccine creation in history, governors that put their citizens’ health first, and Tribal Nations that demonstrated the powerful role of community in curbing spread, despite their criminally underfunded healthcare systems. Collectively these successes reveal the valiant work of many who were committed to saving lives, as well as highlighting the dire need to reform our public health institutions, so they are nimble and resilient enough to confront the next pandemic. With the pandemic now moving into its third year confounding two presidential administrations, Dr. Birx presents a story at once urgent and frustratingly unfinished, as Covid-19 continues to put thousands of American lives at risk. The end result is the most comprehensive and extensive accounting to date of the Trump Administration’s struggle to control the biggest health crisis in generations—a revelatory look at how we can learn from our mistakes and prevent this from happening again.
