Book A History of the Reform Bills of 1866 and 1867 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of the Reform Bills of 1866 and 1867 Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Reform Bills of 1866 and 1867 A concise history of English civilisation might be deciphered from the Statute Book alone. That venerable record, it is true, is silent respecting many subjects which make up the bulk of ordinary annals, and takes but little note of foreign wars, the intricacies of diplomacy, enterprises and exploits of warriors and politicians, or the intrigues of Courts, and the lives of Kings. But the principal epochs in the social progress of the English people are very distinctly and most authentically traced in the great collection which narrates the transactions of their Parliaments and National Councils from the time of the Conquest. How vividly do the Constitutions of Clarendon, for example, represent the issues of the momentous struggle in the reign of Henry II. between the Church and State, and the resolution with which the nation, even at that early period, resisted ecclesiastical domination! The great charters of John and his successors, frequently violated, and as often renewed with more stringent provisions, mark, with equal precision, another characteristic principle of English polity, the limitation of the royal prerogative. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black soldiers first entered the regular army of the United States in the summer of 1866. While their segregated regiments served in the American West for the following three decades, the promise of Reconstruction gave way to the repressiveness of Jim Crow. But black men found a degree of equality in the service: the army treated them no worse than it did their white counterparts. The Black Regulars uses army correspondence, court-martial transcripts, and pension applications to tell who these men were, often in their own words: how they were recruited and how their officers were selected; how the black regiments survived hostile congressional hearings and stringent budget cuts; how enlisted men spent their time, both on and off duty; and how regimental chaplains tried to promote literacy through the army’s schools. The authors shed new light on the military justice system, relations between black troops and their mostly white civilian neighbors, their professional reputations, and what veterans faced when they left the army for civilian life.
