Book Standing Firmly by the Flag

Download or read book Standing Firmly by the Flag written by James E. Potter and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a pool of barely nine thousand men of military age, Nebraska—still a territory at the time—sent more than three thousand soldiers to the Civil War. They fought and died for the Union cause, were wounded, taken prisoner, and in some cases deserted. But Nebraska’s military contribution is only one part of the more complex and interesting story that James E. Potter tells in Standing Firmly by the Flag, the first book to fully explore Nebraska’s involvement in the Civil War and the war’s involvement in Nebraska’s evolution from territory to thirty-seventh state on March 1, 1867. Although distant from the major battlefronts and seats of the warring governments, Nebraskans were aware of the war’s issues and subject to its consequences. National debates about the origins of the rebellion, the policies pursued to quell it, and what kind of nation should emerge once it was over echoed throughout Nebraska. Potter explores the war’s impact on Nebraskans and shows how, when Nebraska Territory sought admission to the Union at war’s end, it was caught up in political struggles over Reconstruction, the fate of the freed slaves, and the relationship between the states and the federal government.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new telling of Mexico’s Second Empire and Louis Napoléon’s installation of Maximilian von Habsburg and his wife, Carlota of Belgium, as the emperor and empress of Mexico, Maximilian and Carlota brings the dramatic, interesting, and tragic time of this six-year-siege to life. From 1861 to 1866, the French incorporated the armies of Austria, Belgium—including forces from Crimea to Egypt—to fight and subdue the regime of Mexico’s Benito Juárez during the time of the U.S. Civil War. France viewed this as a chance to seize Mexican territory in a moment they were convinced the Confederacy would prevail and take over Mexico. With both sides distracted in the U.S., this was their opportunity to seize territory in North America. In 1867, with aid from the United States, this movement came to a disastrous end both for the royals and for France while ushering in a new era for Mexico. In a bid to oust Juárez, Mexican conservatives appealed to European leaders to select a monarch to run their country. Maximilian and Carlota’s reign, from 1864 to 1867, was marked from the start by extravagance and ambition and ended with the execution of Maximilian by firing squad, with Carlota on the brink of madness. This epoch moment in the arc of French colonial rule, which spans North American and European history at a critical juncture on both continents, shows how Napoleon III’s failure to save Maximilian disgusted Europeans and sealed his own fate. Maximilian and Carlota offers a vivid portrait of the unusual marriage of Maximilian and Carlota and of international high society and politics at this critical nineteenth-century juncture. This largely unknown era in the history of the Americas comes to life through this colorful telling of the couple’s tragic reign.

Book The Self Reconstruction of Maryland

Download or read book The Self Reconstruction of Maryland written by William Starr Myers and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Self-Reconstruction of Maryland: 1864-1867 In the year 1901 I published in the John Hopkins Studies (Series XIX) a monograph upon the subject of the Maryland constitution of 1864. The present study is a continuation of the earlier work in point of time, and I have endeavored to show the method by which Maryland entered upon a process of self-reconstruction during the years 1864 to 1867, and the relation of this movement to national politics. It is with pleasure that I acknowledge my great indebtedness to Professors John Martin Vincent and Charles M. Andrews, and to Dr. Bernard C. Steiner, of the Johns Hopkins University, to my relatives Mr. Isaac T. Norris, Mr. J. Olney Norris, and Mr. W. Starr Gephart, of Baltimore, and to numerous surviving leaders of the period, for their unfailing counsel, and for aid in opening up new and valuable sources of information. I have also availed myself of the kind help of Mr. George V. McCreary, Librarian of the Maryland Historical Society, on numerous occasions. Book The Papers of Jefferson Davis

Download or read book The Papers of Jefferson Davis written by Jefferson Davis and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2003-11-07 with total page 770 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last nine months of the Civil War, virtually all of the news reports and President Jefferson Davis’s correspondence confirmed the imminent demise of the Confederate States, the nation Davis had striven to uphold since 1861. But despite defeat after defeat on the battlefield, a recalcitrant Congress, nay-sayers in the press, disastrous financial conditions, failures in foreign policy and peace efforts, and plummeting national morale, Davis remained in office and tried to maintain the government—even after the fall of Richmond on April 2—until his capture by Union forces on May 10, 1865. The eleventh volume of The Papers of Jefferson Davis follows these tumultuous last months of the Confederacy and illuminates Davis’s policies, feelings, ideas, and relationships, as well as the viewpoints of hundreds of southerners—critics and supporters—who asked favors, pointed out abuses, and offered advice on myriad topics. Printed here for the first time are many speeches and a number of new letters and telegrams. In the course of the volume, Robert E. Lee officially becomes general in chief, Joseph E. Johnston is given a final command, legislation is enacted to place slaves in the army as soldiers, and peace negotiations are opened at the highest levels. The closing pages chronicle Davis’s dramatic flight from Richmond, including emotional correspondence with his wife as the two endeavor to find each other en route and make plans for the future in the wreckage of their lives. The holdings of seventy different manuscript repositories and private collections in addition to numerous published sources contribute to Volume 11, the fifth in the Civil War period.
