Book Letters from Bruce County

Download or read book Letters from Bruce County written by Dean Wheaton and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2006-07-27 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Letters from Bruce County documents an English familys 1835 immigration to Ontario where they became pioneers in the unsettled bush. The parents of this family just happen to be the authors great great grandparents, Joseph and Susannah Bacon. The letters were written from Bruce County, Ontario in 1881 and 1882 by Joseph some years after Susannahs death to his son and daughter-in-law, Henry and Elizabeth Couch Bacon, then in Resort Township, Emmet County, Michigan. Henry and Elizabeth are the authors great grandparents. Joseph and Susannah never left Ontario but seven of their eleven children did. Letters is in three parts. Part I has copies of the original letters with printed as written and edited versions annotated to explain what and who Joseph is writing about. Part II is a narrative of the family in England where eight of the eleven children were born, about their immigration and their pioneering in the unsettled Ontario wilderness first in Arthur Township, Waterloo/Wellington Counties and finally in Brant Township, Bruce County. Also included are short synopses of their eleven children. Part III is a three generation modified register genealogy of the family documented with primary source references. The author is indebted to many cousins who are also descendants of Joseph and Susannah and who have contributed information which makes this book more complete.

Download or read book A Nation of Immigrants written by Franca Iacovetta and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2017-06-22 with total page 817 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection brings together a wide array of writings on Canadian immigrant history, including many highly regarded, influential essays. Though most of the chapters have been previously published, the editors have also commissioned original contributions on understudied topics in the field. The readings highlight the social history of immigrants, their pre-migration traditions as well as migration strategies and Canadian experiences, their work and family worlds, and their political, cultural, and community lives. They explore the public display of ethno-religious rituals, race riots, and union protests; the quasi-private worlds of all-male boarding-houses and of female domestics toiling in isolated workplaces; and the intrusive power that government and even well-intentioned social reformers have wielded over immigrants deemed dangerous or otherwise in need of supervision. Organized partly chronologically and largely by theme, the topical sections will offer students a glimpse into Canada's complex immigrant past. In order to facilitate classroom discussion, each section contains an introduction that contextualizes the readings and raises some questions for debate. A Nation of Immigrants will be useful both in specialized courses in Canadian immigration history and in courses on broader themes in Canadian history.

Book Becoming British Columbia

Download or read book Becoming British Columbia written by John Belshaw and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Becoming British Columbia is the first comprehensive, demographic history of British Columbia. Investigating critical moments in the demographic record and linking demographic patterns to larger social and political questions, it shows how biology, politics, and history conspired with sex, death, and migration to create a particular kind of society. John Belshaw overturns the widespread tendency to associate population growth with progress. He reveals that the province has a long tradition of thinking and acting vigorously in ways meant to control and shape biological communities of humans, and suggests that imperialism, race, class, and gender have historically situated population issues at the centre of public consciousness in British Columbia.
