It is a "portmanteau" story, with Dickens writing the opening and closing framing stories, and contributions from five other well-known authors of the time.Contents:The Haunted HouseThe Mortals In The HouseThe Ghost in the Clock RoomThe Ghost in the Double RoomThe Ghost in the Picture RoomThe Ghost in the Cupboard RoomThe Ghost in Master B.'s RoomThe Ghost in the Garden RoomThe Ghost in the Corner RoomDickens's opening story, "The Mortals in the House", demonstrates his mastery of storytelling and characterisation. When the narrator sees a deserted house from his railway carriage he becomes determined to take up residence there. However, the house is said to be haunted and the servants gradually become agitated. The narrator sends them away and invites a group of his friends to stay with him and fend for themselves. On Christmas Eve the friends arrive with the aim of discovering evidence of the supernatural. Secluded in their rooms for the holiday, the friends agree to keep silent about any ghostly experiences until they gather on Twelfth Night. The ghosts the characters see have no connection with the house, and are not even really ghosts; the stories are of injustice, terror, or regret. The tales are all very different, but each has an element of the strange and scary. Some of the house guests have heard stories from ghosts while others have had out-of-body experiences. Wilkie Collins tells a seafaring story of Spanish pirates and the torment of a candle that, as it burns, takes the narrator ever closer to explosion and death. Dickens himself contributes "The Ghost in Master B's Room", a very peculiar tale of the ghost of innocence that hints at the author's own feelings of melancholy. Elizabeth Gaskell contributes a strong story of working people in the north of England. The closing story, "The Ghost in the Corner Room", is again by Dickens.Today, "The Haunted House of 1859" is one of the attractions at Dickens World in Chatham, Kent. This edition of "The Haunted House" contains additional material:* A Brief Biography Of Charles Dickens* A Few Quotes Of Charles Dickens* A Brief Biography Of Elizabeth Gaskell* A Few Quotes Of Elizabeth Gaskell* A Brief Biography Of Wilkie Collins* A Few Quotes Of Wilkie Collins

It is a "portmanteau" story, with Dickens writing the opening and closing stories, framing stories by Dickens himself and five other authors. The story appeared in the Extra Christmas Number on 13 December 1859. Dickens began a tradition of Christmas publications with A Christmas Carol in 1843 and his Christmas stories soon became a national institution. The Haunted House was his 1859 offering. Paranormal Parlor is an eerie assemblage of affordable digital editions, curated with Varla’s sixth sense for tales of the weird and unusual. In the 1859 Christmas edition of his regular publication, All Year Round, Charles Dickens solicited his favorite authors to take up residence in his Haunted House. With an introductory story by Dickens (The Mortals in the House) each author writes from the point of view of the ghost residing in a room. On the Twelfth Night of Christmas, a night believed to hold supernatural powers, the ghost begin to speak. Adelaide Anne Procter, who was Queen Victoria’s favorite poet, delivers the tale of “The Ghost in the Picture Room” entirely in rhyming verse. Wilkie Collins, a lifelong friend of Dickens and a well known author and playwright, delights with his nautical story of “The Ghost in the Cupboard Room.” And Elizabeth Gaskell, in the longest of the stories in the collection, paints a vivid portrait of the ghost of a judge in “The Ghost in the Garden Room.” For any lover of Dickens, Gaskell, or even just a good ghost story, this unique collection will warm the heart and chill the bones.

Book excerpt: The Haunted House is a story published in 1859 for the weekly periodical All the Year Round. It was "Conducted by Charles Dickens", with contributions from others. It is a "portmanteau" story, with Dickens writing the opening and closing stories, framing stories by Dickens himself and five other authors. ''The Mortals in the House'' by Charles Dickens In the first volume of the story, we're introduced to John, the narrator, and his sister Patty, who go to live in the house that's the subject of the tale. The house is ''a solitary house, standing in a sadly neglected garden,'' described as stiff, cold, and formal. It is known to be haunted; in particular, bells ring without provocation and one of the siblings' servants observes ''Eyes'' at the residence. The siblings decide to release all their servants (save Bottles, a deaf stableman) and live in the house by themselves. Patty has an idea to invite seven friends to the house to ''form a Society here for three months'' and observe the ghostly happenings around the home. Indeed, in November, friends begin arriving at the house and draw straws to see who gets what room. From these visitors, we get the remaining volumes in ''The Haunted House.'' Each visitor promises to keep any supernatural occurrences to themselves until the Twelfth Night, ''the last night of holy Christmas,'' when they plan to gather and share their stories. The Middle Stories The stories that come between Dickens' ''The Mortals in the House'' and the concluding ''The Ghost in the Corner Room,'' explain the encounters that each of Jack and Patty's friends have during their stay. These stories include ''The Ghost in the Clock Room,'' The Ghost in the Double Room,'' ''The Ghost in the Picture Room,'' ''The Ghost in the Cupboard Room,'' and ''The Ghost in the Garden Room.'' Each story is different from the rest, but none of them are truly connected. They function much like vignettes, or individual episodes, that each guest experiences in the room they drew the lot for. Some of the stories are told by the ghosts, while others have out-of-body type experiences...
