Book excerpt: In the spring of 1861, John Caldwell Calhoun Sanders, a 21-year-old cadet at the University of Alabama, helped organize a company of the 11th Alabama Volunteer Infantry. Hailing primarily from Greene County, the 109 men of Company C, "The Confederate Guards," signed on for the duration of the war and made Sanders their first captain. They would fight in every major battle in the Eastern Theater, under Robert E. Lee. Leading from the front, Sanders was wounded four times during the war yet rose rapidly through the ranks, becoming one of the South's "boy generals" at 24. By Appomattox, Sanders was dead and the remaining 20 men of Company C surrendered with what was left of the once formidable Army of Northern Virginia. This is their story.

These lesser-known brigadiers, like General Abner M. Perrin (1830–1864), played much more than a casual role in the momentous conflict. Perrin, of the South Carolina 14th Regiment, took part in all of the major battles of the Army of Northern Virginia. At Gettysburg, he assumed command of a brigade whose general was wounded and defeated all opponents to lead the first troops to enter the town. He received a promotion to brigadier general for his actions and commanded his own brigade at Mine Run, the Wilderness, and Spotsylvania, where he was mortally wounded. In 2010, the ratio was 96.7 men for every 100 women at the national level. Mississippi had the lowest per-capita income throughout the 80-year time period between 1930 and 2010. From 1910 to 1920, Los Angeles experienced growth from Hollywood’s dominance in the film industry. Its population increased by 81 percent that decade and its land area more than tripled.
