Book Collett Leventhorpe the English Confederate

Download or read book Collett Leventhorpe the English Confederate written by J. Timothy Cole and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2006-11-28 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of Collett Leventhorpe (1815-1889), an Englishman and former captain in the 14th Regiment of Foot. Leventhorpe came to North Carolina about 1843, settled there, and later served the Confederacy as a colonel in the 34th and 11th N.C. and brigadier general commanding the Home Guard in eastern North Carolina. Though he trained as a physician at the College of Charleston in the late 1840s, he never practiced and was a restless man, endlessly in search of fortune--before the war in the gold fields of North Carolina and Georgia, and after it in the pursuit of lost estates, art treasures and inventions. But he excelled first and foremost as a Confederate soldier. As a field commander he was never defeated in battle, and his record was marred only by his own rejection of a much deserved but very late promotion to CSA brigadier. He lies buried in the beautiful Happy Valley section of Caldwell County.

Each chapter ends with an extensive bibliography and is further enriched by tables, black-and-white illustrations, and examples of documents. Eight appendixes include the expected contact information for groups and institutions that persons studying genealogy and history need to find. ""

Download or read book Miles Lassiter Circa 1777 1850 written by Margo Lee Williams and published by Backintyme. This book was released on 2011 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although antebellum African Americans were sometimes allowed to attend Quaker meetings, they were almost never admitted to full meeting membership, as was Miles Lassiter. His story illuminates the unfolding of the 19th-century color line into the 20th. Margo Williams had only a handful of stories and a few names her mother remembered from her childhood about her family's home in Asheboro, North Carolina. Her research would soon help her to make contact with long lost relatives and a pilgrimage "home" with her mother in 1982. Little did she know she would discover a large loving family and a Quaker ancestor -- a Black Quaker ancestor. -- Publisher's description.

Download or read book The Price They Paid written by Jeff Forret and published by The New Press. This book was released on 2024-11-19 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A prizewinning historian uncovers one of the earliest instances of reparations in America—ironically, though perhaps not surprisingly, paid to slaveholders, not former slaves “A spectacular achievement of historical research. Forret shows for the first time just how far the American government went to secure reparations.” —Robert Elder‚ author of Calhoun: American Heretic In 1831, the American ship Comet, carrying 165 enslaved men, women, and children, crashed onto a coral reef near the shore of the Bahamas, then part of the British Empire. Shortly afterward, the Vice Admiralty Court in Nassau, over the outraged objections of the ship’s owners, set the rescued captives free. American slave owners and the companies who insured the liberated human cargo would spend years lobbying for reparations from Great Britain, not for the emancipated slaves, of course, but for the masters deprived of their human property. In a work of profoundly relevant research and storytelling, historian and Frederick Douglass Prize–winner Jeff Forret uncovers how the Comet incident—as well as similar episodes that unfolded over the next decade—resulted in the British Crown making reparations payments to a U.S. government that strenuously represented slaveholder interests. Through a story that has never been fully explored, The Price They Paid shows how, unlike their former owners and insurers, neither the survivors of the Comet and other vessels, nor their descendants, have ever received reparations for the price they paid in their lives, labor, and suffering during slavery. Any accounting of reparations today requires a fuller understanding of how the debts of slavery have been paid, and to whom. The Price They Paid represents a major step forward in that effort.
