It lists 1,310 heads of families, and, by age groups, the number of free white males and females in each household as well as the number of other free inhabitants and slaves owned. The total represented is over 7,000 persons. The 1818 census, which is arranged by counties, makes up the bulk of this work. It lists over 4,000 heads of families and, for each household, shows the number of free white males over twenty-one, all other white inhabitants, free persons of color, and servants or slaves. This represents an estimated 20,000 persons. In addition, there are notations indicating which heads of households can be found in the federal and state censuses of Illinois for 1820.

From the year 1799, with the formation of Williamson County, Tennessee, the most western third of what was to become Lincoln County in 1809, was then a part of Williamson County, and so until 1807 the eastern two thirds of the area was a part of Rutherford County. And from Dec. 3, 1807 until Nov. 14, 1809, Lincoln was the southern half of Bedford County. These records are a potpourri of early miscellaneous loose court records which have never been published nor microfilmed by the State of Tennessee. These records contain: Guardianship reports and settlements, first land deeds called "The Clerks List," which lists many of the early Grantees and Grantors not recorded in the regular deed index. Also included are early Tax lists before 1830 giving the names of taxable, acreage of deeded and Granted land plus location of same. These miscellaneous records cover the time period of 1809 to about 1840. For the person with lost ancestors in Lincoln county, these records may provide the answer to long sought after forbears.

Book excerpt: The First Census of the United States (1790) comprised an enumeration of the inhabitants of the present states of Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, and Virginia. Unfortunately, during the War of 1812, when the British burned the Capitol at Washington, the returns for several states were destroyed, including those for Virginia, of which Kentucky was a part. In 1940, this "First Census" of Kentucky: 1790, was published, being developed from tax lists from the nine counties which comprised the entire State in 1790. Individuals are listed alphabetically, and following each name is the county of residence and the date of the return. The cumulative returns for Kentucky are included on page one. Book excerpt: The ordeal of twenty-year-old schoolteacher Sarah Pauline White, sentenced in 1864 to confinement at hard labor in the state penitentiary for the duration of the Civil War for writing a letter to a rebel soldier, was one of several painful experiences endured by Wayne County families that are described in Old Wayne. Why her impassioned quest for a pardon failed was never fully explained; but it gained the enthusiastic support of Missouri governor Thomas C. Fletcher, formerly a Union army general, and appears to have been a casualty of President Andrew Johnson's acrimonious relationship with the Missouri commander General John Pope who, at a later time, was fired by Johnson.
