Book excerpt: Community is an evolving and complex concept that historians have applied to localities, counties, and the South as a whole in order to ground larger issues in the day-to-day lives of all segments of society. These social networks sometimes unite and sometimes divide people, they can mirror or transcend political boundaries, and they may exist solely within the cultures of like-minded people. This volume explores the nature of southern communities during the long nineteenth century. The contributors build on the work of scholars who have allowed us to see community not simply as a place but instead as an idea in a constant state of definition and redefinition. They reaffirm that there never has been a singular southern community. As editors Steven E. Nash and Bruce E. Stewart reveal, southerners have constructed an array of communities across the region and beyond. Nor do the contributors idealize these communities. Far from being places of cooperation and harmony, southern communities were often rife with competition and discord. Indeed, conflict has constituted a vital part of southern communal development. Taken together, the essays in this volume remind us how community-focused studies can bring us closer to answering those questions posed to Quentin Compson in Absalom, Absalom!: “Tell [us] about the South. What’s it like there. What do they do there. Why do they live there. Why do they live at all.”

In 1790, Virginia was the most populous state with over 800,000 residents (including territories that are now West Virginia and Kentucky) Between the first Census and the Civil War, the U.S population grew by more than 30 percent each decade In 1870, only 3 percent of U.S. residents were 65 years old and over. With increased life expectancy and lower birth rates, the proportion had grown to 13 percent by 2010. The 1900 census showed that Wyoming, Montana, and Nevada had 150 men for every 100 women. In 2010, the ratio was 96.7 men for every 100 women at the national level. Mississippi had the lowest per-capita income throughout the 80-year time period between 1930 and 2010. From 1910 to 1920, Los Angeles experienced growth from Hollywood’s dominance in the film industry. Its population increased by 81 percent that decade and its land area more than tripled.

Book excerpt: The First Census of the United States (1790) comprised an enumeration of the inhabitants of the present states of Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, and Virginia. Unfortunately, during the War of 1812, when the British burned the Capitol at Washington, the returns for several states were destroyed, including those for Virginia, of which Kentucky was a part. In 1940, this "First Census" of Kentucky: 1790, was published, being developed from tax lists from the nine counties which comprised the entire State in 1790. Individuals are listed alphabetically, and following each name is the county of residence and the date of the return. The cumulative returns for Kentucky are included on page one. The farming, livestock raising, dam building, and pearl and logging industries that have gradually destroyed this region have also been the livelihood of the Appalachian people. The author explores the sometimes conflicting needs of humans and nature in the mountains while presenting impressive and comprehensive research on the increasingly threatened environment of the southern Appalachians.
