Book 1798 Tomorrow the Barrow We ll Cross

Download or read book 1798 Tomorrow the Barrow We ll Cross written by Joe Murphy and published by Liberties Press. This book was released on 2011-10-01 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two brothers, Dan and Tom Banville, find their comfortable rural existence ravaged as Ireland tips inevitably towards war. As the whispers and nods in the pubs and fields explode into all-out Rebellion, the Banville brothers find themselves thrust to the forefront of the revolution. Even as they fight the might of the British empire, more sinister battles must be fought within their own ranks as they struggle against the bigotry and indecision that will challenge the very foundations of the Rebellion. As Loyalists and United Irishmen drift ever further apart, Dan and Tom must fight to free Ireland and themselves - or lose everything. Tomorrow The Barrow We'll Cross is an epic, swashbuckling tale of the romance and hatred, heroism and barbarity of those tragic weeks in the summer of 1798. But over the roar of battle, this is a story about love. Love of family. Love of place. Love of people.

Book Dead Dogs

  • Author : Joe Murphy
  • Publisher : Liberties Press
  • Release : 2012-09-01
  • ISBN : 1907593632
  • Pages : 173 pages

Download or read book Dead Dogs written by Joe Murphy and published by Liberties Press. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where I am now doesn't really matter. What matters is how I got here. How we, how me and Seán, saw that girl getting killed and all the stuff that happened after. And all the stuff that happened before. I saw her getting killed - I know I saw. Seán and me grew up in a town the rest of the world has closed its eyes to. The town we grew up in is a cartoon. A cartoon where we're the butt of every joke, the cloud of dust at the end of every falling anvil. Seán wasn't like the rest of us. Seán isn't like anyone. Seán does stuff to things, things like cats and dogs and guinea pigs. Bad stuff; he can't help it. Dead dogs and a murder. This is how I got here. I saw it happen. I really, really saw it. Dead Dogs is a novel like no other - odd, witty and darkly hilarious, full of pathos and suspense from the beginning to its taut and throttling crescendo. This is a genre-bending achievement by one of Ireland's most talented and original voices.

Book The Gold Sun of Irish Freedom

Download or read book The Gold Sun of Irish Freedom written by Danny Doyle and published by O'Brien Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1998 is the two-hundredth anniversary of the 1798 rebellion, the last popular rebellion against British rule in Ireland until the War of Independence. Its republicanism was inspired by both the American Declaration of Independence and the French Revolution. This book, written and compiled by renowned Irish ballad singer Danny Doyle and author/historian Terence Folan, combines a linking narrative with the history, songs and poetry of the rebellion of 1798. The narrative gives a straightforward, readable account of the background to 1798 and the important events and personalities of the rebellion itself, in Ulster and in Wexford, as well as the French landings in Connacht. Stirring traditional ballads such as 'Who Fears to Speak of Ninety-eight?', 'The Shan Bhan Bhocht', 'Boolavogue', 'The Wearing of the Green', 'Kelly the Boy from Killane' and 'Bodenstown Churchyard' come complete with musical notation and simple guitar chords.

Book Paul Foot

Download or read book Paul Foot written by Margaret Renn and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2024-07-16 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Foot was one of the most influential investigative reporters of his generation. For nearly fifty years, he was the scourge of corrupt politicians and dodgy businessmen, a champion of the underdog. In this, the first biography of Paul Foot, journalist Margaret Renn traces Foot's personal, political and professional trajectories, placing his life and works within the long arc of postwar Britain. Drawing on extensive interviews with those close to him, and utilizing her unparalleled knowledge of his prodigious output, the book brings the many different faces of Paul Foot together into a single portrait. A prolific writer for the Daily Mirror, Private Eye, the Guardian and Socialist Worker, Foot's investigations broke numerous major stories. He wrote about ordinary people caught up in extraordinary events, and the issues in some of his campaigns maintained their prominence long after his death in 2004: police corruption in the Stephen Lawrence case; sexual abuse in children's homes; the Lockerbie bombing. His books ranged from how politicians used race to win votes, through miscarriages of justice, to the politics of poetry and the failure of the vote to deliver power to the people. Paul Foot: A Life in Politics is a brilliant portrait of a committed and active socialist, orator and relentless investigator of wrongdoing.

This book was released on 2017-04-27 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the United States, some populations suffer from far greater disparities in health than others. Those disparities are caused not only by fundamental differences in health status across segments of the population, but also because of inequities in factors that impact health status, so-called determinants of health. Only part of an individual's health status depends on his or her behavior and choice; community-wide problems like poverty, unemployment, poor education, inadequate housing, poor public transportation, interpersonal violence, and decaying neighborhoods also contribute to health inequities, as well as the historic and ongoing interplay of structures, policies, and norms that shape lives. When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways. Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity seeks to delineate the causes of and the solutions to health inequities in the United States. This report focuses on what communities can do to promote health equity, what actions are needed by the many and varied stakeholders that are part of communities or support them, as well as the root causes and structural barriers that need to be overcome.

Book Economic Growth second edition

Download or read book Economic Growth second edition written by Robert J. Barro and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2003-10-10 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long-awaited second edition of an important textbook on economic growth—a major revision incorporating the most recent work on the subject. This graduate level text on economic growth surveys neoclassical and more recent growth theories, stressing their empirical implications and the relation of theory to data and evidence. The authors have undertaken a major revision for the long-awaited second edition of this widely used text, the first modern textbook devoted to growth theory. The book has been expanded in many areas and incorporates the latest research. After an introductory discussion of economic growth, the book examines neoclassical growth theories, from Solow-Swan in the 1950s and Cass-Koopmans in the 1960s to more recent refinements; this is followed by a discussion of extensions to the model, with expanded treatment in this edition of heterogenity of households. The book then turns to endogenous growth theory, discussing, among other topics, models of endogenous technological progress (with an expanded discussion in this edition of the role of outside competition in the growth process), technological diffusion, and an endogenous determination of labor supply and population. The authors then explain the essentials of growth accounting and apply this framework to endogenous growth models. The final chapters cover empirical analysis of regions and empirical evidence on economic growth for a broad panel of countries from 1960 to 2000. The updated treatment of cross-country growth regressions for this edition uses the new Summers-Heston data set on world income distribution compiled through 2000.
