Book Biomining

    Book Details:
  • Author : Douglas E. Rawlings
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-03-09
  • ISBN : 3662061112
  • Pages : 302 pages

Download or read book Biomining written by Douglas E. Rawlings and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biomining is the use of microorganisms in the recovery of metals from ores. During bioleaching, metals such as copper, nickel or zinc are oxidized through microbial action from the water-insoluble sulfide to the soluble sulfate forms. Although gold is inert to microbial action, microbes can also be used in gold recovery from certain types of ores because as they oxidize the ore, they open up its structure, thereby allowing a gold-solubilizing agent such as cyanide to penetrate the ore. The book describes several industrial bioleaching and biooxidation processes as well as the underlying theory and biology of the microbes involved.

Book Ecological Biochemistry

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gerd-Joachim Krauss
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 2015-01-12
  • ISBN : 3527316507
  • Pages : 442 pages

Download or read book Ecological Biochemistry written by Gerd-Joachim Krauss and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-01-12 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first stand-alone textbook for at least ten years on this increasingly hot topic in times of global climate change and sustainability in ecosystems. Ecological biochemistry refers to the interaction of organisms with their abiotic environment and other organisms by chemical means. Biotic and abiotic factors determine the biochemical flexibility of organisms, which otherwise easily adapt to environmental changes by altering their metabolism. Sessile plants, in particular, have evolved intricate biochemical response mechanisms to fit into a changing environment. This book covers the chemistry behind these interactions, bottom up from the atomic to the system's level. An introductory part explains the physico-chemical basis and biochemical roots of living cells, leading to secondary metabolites as crucial bridges between organisms and the respective ecosystem. The focus then shifts to the biochemical interactions of plants, fungi and bacteria within terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems with the aim of linking biochemical insights to ecological research, also in human-influenced habitats. A section is devoted to methodology, which allows network-based analyses of molecular processes underlying systems phenomena. A companion website offering an extended version of the introductory chapter on Basic Biochemical Roots is available at http://www.wiley.com/go/Krauss/Nies/EcologicalBiochemistry

Book Microbial Processing of Metal Sulfides

Download or read book Microbial Processing of Metal Sulfides written by Edgardo R. Donati and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-11 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The application of microbiological methods to the extraction of metals from minerals is supported by several bioleaching and biooxidation processes operating in different sites over the world. This book details the basic aspects of the process with special emphasis on recent contributions regarding the chemical and microbial aspects of the bioleaching process and the use of microorganisms in the treatment of complex ores and concentrates.

Book Biogeochemistry of Ancient and Modern Environments

Download or read book Biogeochemistry of Ancient and Modern Environments written by P. A. Trudinger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 870 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a selection of papers presented to the Fourth International Symposium on Environmental Biogeochemistry (ISEB), and a conference on Biogeochemistry in Relation to Mining Industry and Environmental Pollution (Leaching Conferenc~, held in Canberra, Aust ralia on August 26-31 and September 3-4, 1979, respectively. The ISEB were established to provide "a forum for uninhibited exchange of information and ideas among the biological, chemical, atmospheric and geolopical scientists working in the common area of biogeochemistry, encompassing soil and other earth sciences as weIL as the hydrosphere and atmosphere", By linking the fourth ISEB with the Leachinp Conference the scop.e of discussions was extended to encompass the application of biogeochemical processes to the mining industry. This wide-ranging philosophy is reflected in the breadth and diversity of the subjects covered in this book. The published papers are expanded versions of those presented at the meetings. They have all been scrutinized by at least one referee in addition to the editors. About 20% of the contributions to the meetings are not included, either because authors did not wish to publish or because the papers were not accepted by the editors.

Book Biohydrometallurgy and the Environment Toward the Mining of the 21st Century

Download or read book Biohydrometallurgy and the Environment Toward the Mining of the 21st Century written by R. Amils and published by Elsevier Science Limited. This book was released on 1999 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major theme of the International Biohydrometallurgy Symposium IBS-99 'Biohydrometallurgy and the Environment toward the mining of the 21st Century', held in El Escorial (Spain) from 20-23 June 1999, is biohydrometallurgy and the environment since it is predicted that in the coming century biotechnology will make its greatest contribution in this area. From the papers in these volumes it is clear that environmental issues are already of great interest to the biohydrometallurgical community. Although all the classical biohydrometallurgical topics - e.g. bioleaching, microbiology, molecular biology, biosorption, bioremediation - are addressed, the continued emphasis is on the environmentally friendly aspects of the biotechnologies used. Given the interdisciplinary nature of the field, biologists, hydrometallurgists, geologists, chemists, physicists and engineers should be interested in this collection of papers which discuss the future trends in biohydrometallurgy.
