Book excerpt: "This exhibition is the first to offer an extensive overview of the Museum's holdings of early Central European drawings, many of which were acquired in the last two decades. An emphasis on works by later sixteenth- and seventeenth-century artists is balanced by a selection of German drawings from the fifteenth and earlier sixteenth century, of which some of the most exceptional ones--including works by Albrecht Deurer--entered the Museum with The Robert Lehman Collection in 1975."--Publisher's website.

Book North European Panel Paintings

Download or read book North European Panel Paintings written by Christa Grössinger and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1992 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religious paintings still found today in English churches, cathedrals, and colleges have rarely been studied in depth. Hidden away in country churches and colleges, they have received little attention, and yet they add greatly to the understanding of Continental art of the late fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. This book brings together over 70 Northern European paintings and altar pieces. The artwork demonstrates the high quality of the output of Netherland workshops, particularly of the Antwerp Mannerists, as well as the remarkable individual works from Germany, many of which drew upon Dürer's prints for inspiration. The author traces the origins of the works, which were frequently produced with a foreign trade in mind, and shows how they found their way to their present locations, often as memorials, or to enrich the ecclesiastical buildings. By considering how these benefactions were made possible by the dispersal of religious works on the continent in the wake of the Napoleonic wars, picked up by travellers, or sold through the London art market, this book offers interesting insight into the history of collecting.

Book Late Medieval Panel Paintings II

Download or read book Late Medieval Panel Paintings II written by Nicholas Herman and published by Paul Holberton Publishing. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an exemplary investigation of a series of, so far, poorly documented works that will prove of great interest to those in the field. Most of the 15th- or early 16th-century panel paintings presented here are northern European, a large number German, which have been neglected in English language studies. They are all almost unknown, and certainly none of them have been subjected to modern techniques of investigation - infrared, x-ray, micro-photography - until now.0Exhibition: Sam Fogg, New York.

Book excerpt: Paintings by Renaissance masters Lucas Cranach the Elder, Albrecht Durer, and Hans Holbein the Younger are among the works featured in this lavish volume, the first to comprehensively study the largest collection of early German paintings in America. These works, created in the 14th through 16th centuries in the region that comprises present-day Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, include religious images - such as "Virgin and Child with Saint Anne" by Durer and the double-sided altarpiece "The Dormition of the Virgin" by Hans Schaufelein - as well as remarkable portraits by Holbein and the iconic "Judgment of Paris" by Cranach. In all, more than 70 works are thoroughly discussed and analyzed, making this volume an incomparable resource for the study of this rich artistic period.

Book Fifteenth Century German and Bohemian Panel Paintings

Download or read book Fifteenth Century German and Bohemian Panel Paintings written by János Végh and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the monumental mural art of Romanesque style, the glass painting of Early Gothic cathedrals and miniature painting so warmly favored by courtly culture, medieval panel painting, an interesting and attractive field in the history of German art, aspired to the proud rank of leadership. Born on small-size diptychs and portable altars, it became the progenitor of the vast realm of easel pictures with an extensive province of themes, the forerunner of the portrait, the still-life, of genre-painting, in general of all the motives that were to appear again and again in frescoes of loftily solemn tone without having a proper place of their own. The aristocratic art of miniature painting was inaccessible to the wider public, leaving its demand for the spectacular unsatisfied. While gazing at major altarpieces, at the triptychs gleaming with gold and colors in the dim glimmer inside Gothic churches, people found ample opportunities for enjoying new representations of century-old sacred themes painted in a life-like manner after the intense, veritably naturalist conception of the Late Middle Ages, virtually dividing the picture into series of scenes fully comprehensible to the spectator. This demand was manifest in occasional details of the genre-scene type to be discovered in a fair number of pictures, the arrangement of minor utensils to form a complete still-life, the portrait-like verisimilitude of some figures; these were to become the preshaped elements of artistic forms destined to emerge later and to acquire independence. - p. 5.

Book Early Netherlandish and German Paintings

Download or read book Early Netherlandish and German Paintings written by National Gallery (Great Britain) and published by Collins. This book was released on 1985 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It is usual when thinking of the painting of the Renaissance to concentrate on the great Italian masterpieces. But to think exclusively along those lines would be to exclude the very great, and to modern eyes very appealing, painting that was happening at the same time north of the Alps. . . Van der Weyden, Memling, Bosch, Dürer, Altdorfer, Lucas Cranach and Holbein are all here, reflecting the National Gallery's very high quality holdings of the paintings of those schools. And, because the volume covers the whole of the German holdings, there are modern works like Klimt's sumptuous portrait of Hermine Gallia too." -- Page 7, 8.
