Book excerpt: While a majority of the current body of literature regarding marital functioning explores areas of satisfaction and dissatisfaction within a marriage, few studies examine gender-specific differences in an effort to better identify that which leads to positive marital functioning or dissolution. The present study explores gender differences within the 16 Personality Factor Couple's Counseling Report (16PF CCR) variables of overall Marital Satisfaction, Personality Similarity, and Relationship Adjustment of a clinical sample. Results indicated that men endorsed significantly more overall marital satisfaction and are significantly more satisfied than women on the individual satisfaction item Division of Roles, Finances, and Caring and Affection. Women rated themselves significantly higher on the Primary Personality Factor Warmth Liveliness, Perfectionism and Sensitivity while men rated themselves significantly higher on the Primary Personality Factor Vigilance, Abstractedness, Privateness, Self Reliance, and Tension. Further, Women rated themselves significantly higher on the Global Personality Factor Extraversion and Self-Control. No significant difference in the Relationship Adjustment Scores between men and women was observed. Finally, this study showed women responded in a manner endorsing social desirability significantly more than men while men responded in a manner endorsing agreeableness significantly more than women. The limitations, implications, and arguments for further research of the current study are discussed.

Book Testing and Assessment in Counseling Practice

Download or read book Testing and Assessment in Counseling Practice written by C. Edward Watkins, Jr. and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this revision remains identical to that of the first edition--to show how key personality, cognitive/behavioral, and vocational tests/assessment procedures can be used by counselors in their work with clients. Too often, assessment books only provide the reader with information about tests and assessment procedures. They do not, however, take the next step--showing readers how these tests/assessment procedures can be used and integrated into the actual work of counseling. This revision is designed to fill that void. Chapter authors, all of whom are experts in their respective topic areas, share the theoretical and research backgrounds about a particular test/assessment procedure and then provide a case example or examples to show how assessment data can be meaningfully incorporated into the counseling process.

Book Understanding Psychological Assessment

Download or read book Understanding Psychological Assessment written by William I. Dorfman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introductory texts on psychological testing and evaluation historically are not in short supply. Typically, however, such texts have been relatively superficial in their discussion of clinical material and have focused primarily on the theoretical and psychometric properties of indi vidual tests. More practical, clinically relevant presentations of psychological instruments have been confined to individual volumes with advanced and often very technical information geared to the more sophisticated user. Professors in introductory graduate courses are often forced to adopt several advanced texts to cover the material, at the same time helping students wade through unnecessary technical information in order to provide a basic working knowl edge of each test. Understanding Psychological Assessment is an attempt to address these concerns. It brings together into a single volume a broad sampling of the most respected instruments in the psychologist's armamentarium along with promising new tests of cognitive, vocational, and personality functioning. Additionally, it presents the most updated versions of these tests, all in a practical, clearly written format that covers the development, psychometrics, administra tive considerations, and interpretive hypotheses for each instrument. Clinical case studies allow the reader to apply the interpretive guidelines to real clinical data, thereby reinforcing basic understanding of the instrument and helping to insure that both the student and practi tioner can actually begin to use the test. Understanding Psychological Assessment includes cognitive and personality tests for adults, children, and adolescents, as well as chapters on the theory of psychological measurement and integrated report writing.
