This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dr. John Jones's Practical Phonography (1701) It is hardly necessary in this place to say anything on the plan and arrangement of the present work. The general scope was determined by the plan laid down by the Editor in the first volume of the "Neudrucke." As regards the arrangement of the treatise on the language in Jones' Practical Phonography a detailed account will be found in 74 ff. It is my pleasant duty to express my sincere thanks to the Editor of this series, Dr. R. Brotanek of Vienna, not only for allowing this work to appear in the "Neudrucke," but also for much valuable information. To the authorities of the Gottingen University Library I owe a debt of gratitude for their courtesy in placing the Gottingen copy of the "Practical Phonography" at my disposal during the time the reprint was being put into type. To die Kaiserliche Akademie der Wissenschaften in Vienna, which has subsidised this work - and, in fact, the series of which it forms a part - I tender my grateful thanks. Book A History of English Phonology

Download or read book A History of English Phonology written by Charles Jones and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an attempt to view historical phonological change as an ongoing, recurrent process. The author sees like events occurring at all periods, a phenomenon which he considers is disguised by too great a reliance upon certain characteristics of the scholarly tradition. Thus he argues that those innovations arrived at by speakers of the English language many years ago are not in principle unlike those that can be seen to be happening today. Phonological mutations are, on the whole, not to be regarded as unique, novel, once only events. Speakers appear to present to speech sound materials, a limited set of evaluative and decoding perceptions, together with what would seem to be a finite number of innovation producing stratagems in response to their interpretation. It is stressed that this interpretation may itself be a direct product of the kinds of data selected for presentation in traditional handbooks and Jones notes the fact that phonological change is often "messy" and responsive to a highly tuned ability to perceive fine phonetic detail of a type which, by definition, rarely has the opportunity to surface in historical data sources.

Book The Cambridge History of the English Language

Download or read book The Cambridge History of the English Language written by Richard M. Hogg and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 812 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of the Cambridge History of the English Language covers the period 1476-1776, beginning at the time of the establishment of Caxton's first press in England and concluding with the American Declaration of Independence, the notional birth of the first (non-insular) extraterritorial English. It encompasses three centuries which saw immense cultural change over the whole of Europe: the late middle ages, the renaissance, the reformation, the enlightenment, and the beginnings of romanticism. During this time, Middle English became Early Modern English and then developed into the early stages of indisputably 'modern', if somewhat old-fashioned, English. In this book, the distinguished team of six contributors traces these developments, covering orthography and punctuation, phonology and morphology, syntax, lexis and semantics, regional and social variation, and the literary language. The volume also contains a glossary of linguistic terms and an extensive bibliography.

Book English Pronunciation in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries

Download or read book English Pronunciation in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries written by C. Jones and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-12-16 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work provides a detailed account of word level pronunciation in England and Scotland between 1700 and 1900. All major and minor source materials are presented in depth and there is a close discussion of contemporary attitudes to pronunciation standards and orthographic reform. The materials are presented in three chronological periods: 1700-1750, 1750-1800 and the Nineteenth century, so that the reader is able not only to see the main characteristics of the pronunciation of both vowels and consonants in each period, but can also compare developments from one period to another, thus identifying ongoing changes to the phonology.
