Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 160 Acres: Growing up on a Minnesota Dairy Farm Discover what life was like growing up on a Minnesota dairy farm. Work hard and play hard alongside the Fisher family during the dairy farming boom years of the 1960s and 1970s; a time when a family could earn a good living off of 160 acres of land and milking thirty dairy cows. It was also a time when farm kids had to work just as hard as adults to keep the farm solvent. Read true stories about those kids milking cows, driving tractors, baling hay, fixing machinery, raising livestock, and butchering pigs. You'll also read about their wild adventures riding livestock, driving a schoolbus, and rebelling against a strict father. This book will give the reader an accurate snapshot of a colorful way of life that has now disappeared across most of the country.

Book Roots in the Land

Download or read book Roots in the Land written by Doug Brosseau and published by First Edition Design eBook Publishing. This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written from the perspective of the boy and only son, the author recalls many, many of his experiences growing up on a small, family-owned, farm in southwestern Minnesota. The setting primarily spans the turbulent decades of the 1960s and early 1970s. Many memories, stories, anecdotes, detailed and vivid descriptions, and imagery are preserved for the enjoyment of family, friends, and those generations of readers who are curious about what life was really like on the small farm in the "old days." This life experience bestowed the author with the famous Midwestern Work Ethic and a set of values that were important in later life. The story is not "sugar-coated" but honest and faithful regarding the realities of farm life as experienced in those days. Finally, the author provides an excellent narrative of the forces and influences that led to his decision to leave the farm and to explore new places, new relationships, and new and exciting experiences. About the Author -: Doug Brosseau was born and raised on a small, family-owned, dairy, chicken, hog and cash crop farm in southwestern Minnesota. After making the difficult decision to leave the farm, he enrolled in and obtained a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Minnesota. Doug's early life on the farm taught him both a strong work ethic as well as a growing and maturing environmental ethic and love of the natural world. While he pursued his engineering career in a number of states, Doug immersed himself in nature and travel experiences. Early travels in the Minnesota Boundary Waters Canoe Area led to many, many more lake excursions in northern Minnesota, as well as river trips on both quiet-water and white-water canoe outings in both Minnesota and Wisconsin. He also enjoyed simple forms of tent camping while on bicycling, motorcycling and river trips throughout those areas. In his mid-twenties, Doug felt compelled to explore the western United States while he was still young and healthy. This drive to see and experience led to a three-month hiking and backpacking trip in 1979 to many of the most remote and majestic wilderness areas of the West. That lengthy introduction to wild places led to a life-long pursuit of backpacking, day hiking, and walking among nature's wonders. In 1982, Doug also planned and took another trip completely around the United States, this time on motorcycle. Pulling an unheard-of (at that time) utility trailer behind a small Yamaha 650, he successfully toured most of the United States on a memorable 20,000-mile journey of discovery. Doug has lived and worked in the Albuquerque, New Mexico area for over thirty years. Together with his wife of twelve years, Doug continues to enjoy hours of walking and hiking and a simple lifestyle. keywords: Minnesota, Farm, Family, Stories, Work, Play, Ethic, Experiences, Values, Roots

Book Leaving the Farm

Download or read book Leaving the Farm written by Ross Klatte and published by Lantzville, B.C. : Oolichan Books. This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leaving the Farm is a poignant, funny, beautifully rendered memoir about growing up on a small Minnesota dairy farm in the 1950s. It was a time when family farms throughout North America were beginning to disappear. Tracing his family's roots from Quebec and Saskatchewan to Minnesota, Ross Klatte tells the story of the struggle between a bookish, daydreaming boy and his self-made, driven father - the tension between real life on the farm and the boy's imaginative world. It's a story that lovingly delineates the richness and drudgery of farm life, the emotion of family ties, and a rapturous intimacy with nature. Above all it's a farm boy's story. At first, the farm, with its surrounding fields and woods, provides a natural playground for the boy. Later, called upon to do a man's work and expected to take over the farm someday, the boy begins to feel trapped and dreams of escape. He escapes into worlds of his imagination based on avid reading and his longing for other places. One day he is shocked awake, into dreadful reality, when his four-year-old sister is killed on the farm. Within a year and a half of that terrible accident, his parents hold an auction of their livestock and machinery and the boy leaves for Navy boot camp. This memoir is Ross Klatte's tender requiem for his lost sister, for the father with whom he struggled for freedom, and for his childhood on the farm, whose shape has indelibly imprinted itself on the man he has become. "Ross Klatte leads us to an epic comprehension of the loss of one family's farm, with writing so eloquent and disarming, so deftly nuanced and intensely moving that my sorrowful empathy with the tragedy herein is balanced by the sheer pleasure of reading such good writing. This is a wonderful achievement..." - Caroline Woodward
