Book Violin Sonatas I IV and Viola Sonata

Download or read book Violin Sonatas I IV and Viola Sonata written by Allen Sapp and published by A-R Editions, Inc.. This book was released on with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The five sonatas in this edition exhibit Allen Sapp’s characteristic expansive lyricism and depth of expression. Violin Sonata I was composed in 1942–43 while Sapp was studying with Nadia Boulanger and Aaron Copland. Following his service in Europe during World War II, he composed his Violin Sonata II and Viola Sonata in 1948. Klaus George Roy, in his review of a Boston performance by Joseph De Pasquale, called Sapp’s Viola Sonata “a work of beauty and immediate emotional appeal. There is a genuine lyric line and warmth of expression, carried by a real mastery of the polyphonic medium. . . . Who says the moderns can’t write a melody?” While these first three string sonatas were cast in a neoclassical style, Violin Sonatas III (1960) and IV (1981) are written with more chromatically complex harmonies and employ serial composition techniques, yet still exhibit a strong tonal orientation. Sapp considered Violin Sonata IV as the beginning of his late phase of composition, and possibly the most memorable of his works.

Book Brahms s Violin Sonatas

Download or read book Brahms s Violin Sonatas written by Joel Lester and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Brahms's Violin Sonatas: Style, Structure, and Performance is a companion volume to Joel Lester's award-winning 1999 study Bach's Works for Solo Violin: Style, Structure, and Performance. Using a minimum of technical language and with annotated musical examples illustrating almost every point, Brahms's Violin Sonatas explores three masterpieces of the concert repertoire in a book designed for performers and music scholars alike. A major focus is how much can be learned by carefully reading Brahms's artistically nuanced musical notation, and by understanding Brahms's style-especially his music's deep connections to Classical-Era harmony, phrasing, and form while at the same time using late-19th-century harmonies, dissonances, and thematic evolutions, along with the contrapuntal textures that imbues all his works with a uniquely "Brahmsian" sound. Lester also explores how these works relate to important events in Brahms's life. Practical and concrete suggestions on performance arise from many of these discussions, calling performers' and analysts' attention to both technical and interpretive matters. Lester's aim is to inspire readers to explore their own individual approaches to Brahms's music, balancing what they find in the music to how they balance today's performance and interpretive styles with the ways that Brahms himself and his contemporaries might have played and experienced his creations"--

Book Bach Three Sonatas and Three Partitas for Solo Violin

Download or read book Bach Three Sonatas and Three Partitas for Solo Violin written by JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH and published by Mel Bay Publications. This book was released on 2010-10-07 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Lawrence Golan's edition of Bach's masterpieces for solo violin combines the authenticity and accuracy of a Scholarly Urtext Edition with the practicality and helpfulness of a Performing Edition. A facsimile of Bach's autograph manuscript was used in the preparation of this edition and the composer's intentions have been preserved to the last detail. of particular note is the fact that all stems have been beamed together as they appear in the autograph manuscript. This is of great importance when making interpretive decisions regarding dotted rhythms. Helpful fingering and bowing suggestions are provided by the editor, but are clearly distinguished from Bach's original notation, allowing the performer the freedom to accept or reject any given suggestion. the volume comes complete with Dr. Golan's essay Performing Bach: Dotted Rhythms and Trills in the Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin, which also includes scholarly discussions of vibrato, fingerings, bowing styles, and ritardandos in Baroque music. the inclusion of this comprehensive study of Baroque performance practices makes this edition a must for any violinist interested in performing the Bach Sonatas and Partitas in an historically informed manner.

Book Historical Dictionary of Music of the Classical Period

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Music of the Classical Period written by Bertil van Boer and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2012-04-05 with total page 665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we speak of “classical music” it often refers rather loosely to serious “art” music but at the core is really the music of the classical period running from about 1730 to 1800, give or take. This was truly one of the most glorious periods for both composition and performance and it is this classical music which is still at the core of today’s repertoire. Obvious names connected with this period are Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, but there were many more still reasonably well known like Gluck and C.P.E Bach, and dozens more who are regrettably little known today. This Historical Dictionary of Music of the Classical Period includes not only these composers, but also eminent conductors and performers, patrons, and publishers. There are also dictionary entries on major centers of music-making, typical instruments, important technical terms, and emerging musical forms, including the symphony and opera. Indeed, with a 1,000 cross-referenced entries, there is information on most matters of interest. This is prefaced by an extensive chronology, tracing the course of this period from year to year, and an introduction taking a careful look at the period as a whole. Finally, there is a substantial bibliography. Surely, this is a book which will appeal not only to students and researchers but all music-lovers.

Book Beethoven in Russia

    Book Details:
  • Author : Frederick W. Skinner
  • Publisher : Indiana University Press
  • Release : 2022-11-01
  • ISBN : 0253063078
  • Pages : 270 pages

Download or read book Beethoven in Russia written by Frederick W. Skinner and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2022-11-01 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did Ludwig van Beethoven help overthrow a tsarist regime? With the establishment of the Russian Musical Society and its affiliated branches throughout the empire, Beethoven's music reached substantially larger audiences at a time of increasing political instability. In addition, leading music critics of the regime began hearing Beethoven's dramatic works as nothing less than a call to revolution. Beethoven in Russia deftly explores the interface between music and politics in Russia by examining the reception of Beethoven's works from the late 18th century to the present. In part 1, Frederick W. Skinner's clear and sweeping review examines the role of Beethoven's more dramatic works in the revolutionary struggle that culminated in the Revolution of 1917. In part 2, Skinner reveals how this same power was again harnessed to promote Stalin's campaign of rapid industrialization. The appropriation of Beethoven and his music to serve the interests of the state remained the hallmark of Soviet Beethoven reception until the end of communist rule. With interdisciplinary appeal in the areas of history, music, literature, and political thought, Beethoven in Russia shows how Beethoven's music served as a call to action for citizens and weaponized state propaganda in the great political struggles that shaped modern Russian history.

Book Beethoven The Moonlight and Other Sonatas Op 27 and Op 31

Download or read book Beethoven The Moonlight and Other Sonatas Op 27 and Op 31 written by Timothy Jones and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-10-21 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even in Beethoven's day the 'Moonlight' Sonata was a popular favourite. This 1999 book provides an accessible introduction to the Sonatas Opp. 27 and 31 (including The 'Moonlight' and 'The Tempest'), aimed at pianists, students, and music lovers. It begins with the works' historical background - the emergence of a 'piano culture' at the end of the eighteenth century, Beethoven's aristocratic milieu in Vienna, and his oft-quoted intention to follow a new compositional path. An account of the sonatas' genesis is followed by a discussion of their reception history, including a survey of changing performing styles since the mid-nineteenth century. The concept of the Sonata quasi una Fantasia is examined in relation to the cult of artistic sensibility in early-nineteenth-century Vienna. The study concludes with a critical introduction to each sonata.

Book The Violin

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mark Katz
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2006-02-09
  • ISBN : 1135576963
  • Pages : 423 pages

Download or read book The Violin written by Mark Katz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-02-09 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The violin was first mentioned in a book in the sixteenth century. An abundant and diverse literature on the instrument has grown since then, and a complete general guide to these materials has not been produced in the modern era. The last, Edward Heron-Allen's De Fidiculis Bibliographia , was published in1894. This book fills that void, organizing and annotating information on the violin from a variety of fields and sources. It provides a comprehensive, though selective, guide to all facets of the instrument. The book is divided into 4 main parts: Reference and General Studies; Acoustics and Construction; Violin Playing, Performance Practice, and Music; and Violinists, Composers, and Violin Teachers. It will serve as a ready reference for students and scholars, and is a welcome addition to the esteemed Routledge Music Bibliography series.
