This book was released on 2023-08-08 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenging established views and assumptions about traditions and practices of filmmaking in the African diaspora, this three-volume set offers readers a researched critique on black film. Volume Two of this landmark series on African cinema is devoted to the decolonizing mediation of the Pan African Film & Television Festival of Ouagadougou (FESPACO), the most important, inclusive, and consequential cinematic convocation of its kind in the world. Since its creation in 1969, FESPACO's mission is, in principle, remarkably unchanged: to unapologetically recover, chronicle, affirm, and reconstitute the representation of the African continent and its global diasporas of people, thereby enunciating in the cinematic, all manner of Pan-African identity, experience, and the futurity of the Black World. This volume features historically significant and commissioned essays, commentaries, conversations, dossiers, and programmatic statements and manifestos that mark and elaborate the key moments in the evolution of FESPACO over the span of the past five decades.

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Burkina Faso written by Lawrence Rupley and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Burkina Faso, known as Upper Volta until its independence from France in 1960, and locally called the "land of the upright people," is a medium-sized land-locked country with no less than six neighbors, some of which periodically get into trouble... which makes it reasonably strategic in some ways. While it has not done as poorly as some other African states, its economic has certainly not prospered and many Burkinabe go abroad to earn a living. As for politics, it is another case of stability without democracy, even if there are periodic elections. Still, this is better than not even having stability. This third edition of Historical Dictionary of Burkina Faso covers its history through a chronology, an introductory essay, maps, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 1000 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Burkina Faso.
Download or read book French speaking Women Documentarians written by Janis L. Pallister and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2005 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: French-Speaking Women Documentarians is a guide for teachers of French and others interested in selecting and researching the work of female French-speaking documentarians. Represented in this book are filmmakers from Canada, various African nations, the Antilles, Lebanon, Switzerland, Belgium, and several other countries, with emphasis on Agnès Varda of France - arguably the greatest female documentarian of all. The book includes information on each filmmaker, classified by country of origin, and lists and describes her works, giving factual information such as date, duration, credits, and synopses, and pointing out critical treatments, both in English and in French, of her most important films. Shorts, docudramas, and works of animation are also discussed, as they, too, reflect history and culture. This guide will lead to the viewing of films that shed understanding on the culture being portrayed and to a greater appreciation of the contribution of French-speaking women filmmakers to this important, if not always objective, film genre.

Download or read book Gender Terrains in African Cinema written by Dominica Dipio and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2019-04-12 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender Terrains in African Cinema reflects on a body of canonical African filmmakers who address a trajectory of pertinent social issues. Dipio analyses gender relations around three categories of female characters the girl child, the young woman and the elderly woman and their male counterparts. Although gender remains the focal point in this lucid and fascinating text, Dipio engages attention in her discussion of African feminism in relation to Western feminism. With its broad appeal to African humanities, Gender Terrains in African Cinema stands as a unique and radical contribution to the field of (African) film studies, which until now, has suffered from a paucity of scholarship.

Download or read book African Cinema written by Kenneth W. Harrow and published by Africa Research and Publications. This book was released on 1999 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These essays speak directly and compellingly to contemporary issues in African cinema. They address key aspects of postcolonialism and feminism-the two major topics of interest in current criticism. Issues of spectatorship, national identity, ethnography, patriarchy, women's roles, and the creation of key film industries-issues that animate the discussion of film today, are central to this volume. Although there were filmmaking practices in Africa that date back to the colonial period, the films generally viewed and discussed here by students and critics of African film, those directed by Africans, and those made after independence in the early 1960s. The essays on the formation of three principal national film industries-those of Nigeria, Senegal and the lusophone countries-best exemplify the emergence of African cinema when viewed from the optic of language or nation. In addition, studies of genre, patriarchal structures, spectatorship, and representation, are central to the essays on women's films from Algeria, West Africa, and the Sahel. Stephen Zack's study of Reassemblage offers a brilliant meditation on difference, anthropology and Trinh's positioning in her seminal work. Postcolonial theory is employed and examined in Jonathan Haynes's study of one of Africa's most innovative filmmakers, Jean-Pierre Bekolo. The grounding of a new approach to cinematic art in a specifically African aesthetic is the subject of a study on orality in African cinema by Keyan Tomaselli, Arnold Shepperson and Maureen Eke. This is complemented by the studies of individual films, such as Wend Kunni, Yeelen, and Sankofa, films that have had a strong impact on how we think of the African-centeredaesthetic and vision of cinema, of history, of tradition. Emilie Ngo-Nguidjol's bibliographic essay provides invaluable information on sources dealing with African women directors.

This book looks at the diverse experiences of both female film pioneers and women film students; through a series of interviews the author discovers what motivated these women to take up film and discusses both the creative aspects of their work and their broader political concerns.
