Download or read book Exploring Latin Structures Functions Meaning written by Lucie Pultrová and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-11-18 with total page 697 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This two-volume work contains a selection of papers first presented at the 22nd International Colloquium on Latin Linguistics, held in Prague (2023). The papers address important issues in Latin linguistics with a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches. The first volume ("Word") contains texts concerning Latin phonology, etymology, flexion and derivation, and lexical semantics, both with respect to individual words and to entire word classes. Both diachronic and synchronic perspectives are employed in the discussion of the various issues. The second volume ("Clause and Discourse") includes papers dealing with issues of syntax and semantics, and with the structure of texts and pragmatic aspects. One of the subchapters, entitled "Conversation and Dialogue", contains papers presented at the conference in a separate workshop of the same name, linked by a common methodological framework of "Conversation Analysis". This book provides essential texts for researchers in the field of Latin linguistics and may also be of use to linguists who work primarily with other languages.

Book Secretis bene uiuere siluis

Download or read book Secretis bene uiuere siluis written by Stratis Kyriakidis and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-06-25 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents essays written in honour of Robert Maltby, Emeritus Professor of Latin at the University of Leeds. It offers a rich collection of modern scholarship covering a wide range of literary genres in Latin literature, spanning from Augustan times up to the Italian Renaissance. The value of this volume lies in its inclusion of new interpretations of well-discussed texts from the past, shedding light on texts that have recently garnered scholarly attention and sparked lively discussions. Fifteen essays reflect the main areas of scholarship and interests of the honoree in a variety of Roman literary genres, with special focus on the Corpus Tibullianum, but also on etymologising and textual criticism. The collection is not exclusively intended for classicists, historical linguists, and textual critics. By providing insightful discussions and fresh interpretations of themes and issues in Latin literature from a contemporary perspective, it also appeals to anyone interested in Mediterranean studies, the socio-cultural aspects of literature, and comparative literature.

Book Social Variation and the Latin Language

Download or read book Social Variation and the Latin Language written by J. N. Adams and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-05-23 with total page 957 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Languages show variations according to the social class of speakers and Latin was no exception, as readers of Petronius are aware. The Romance languages have traditionally been regarded as developing out of a 'language of the common people' (Vulgar Latin), but studies of modern languages demonstrate that linguistic change does not merely come, in the social sense, 'from below'. There is change from above, as prestige usages work their way down the social scale, and change may also occur across the social classes. This book is a history of many of the developments undergone by the Latin language as it changed into Romance, demonstrating the varying social levels at which change was initiated. About thirty topics are dealt with, many of them more systematically than ever before. Discussions often start in the early Republic with Plautus, and the book is as much about the literary language as about informal varieties.

Book Gargilius Martialis The Agricultural Fragments

Download or read book Gargilius Martialis The Agricultural Fragments written by James L. Zainaldin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-02 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the third century CE, the North African polymath, soldier, and provincial official Q. Gargilius Martialis (died 260) wrote a treatise on the cultivation and medical use of fruits, vegetables, and herbs. The agricultural part of this work survives in a fragmentary state in a single manuscript. Despite this impediment, the agricultural writings are noteworthy for the clear marks both of their meticulous research and of the application of independent judgement and experience. Gargilius furthermore presents his advice in a stylized and literary form that strives for elegance through the use of prose rhythm, rhetorical variatio, and figurative language. The fragments will be valuable for those interested in ancient agriculture, in Greco-Roman authorship on the technai or artes, and in the history and sociolinguistics of Latin. This volume offers a new edition and the first English translation of Gargilius' agricultural fragments as well as an introduction and full-scale commentary.

Book Historical Linguistics 2015

Download or read book Historical Linguistics 2015 written by Michela Cennamo and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2019-09-15 with total page 649 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collection of articles presented in this volume addresses a number of general theoretical, methodological and empirical issues in the field of Historical Linguistics, in different levels of analysis and on different themes: (i) phonology, (ii) morphology, (iii) morphosyntax, (iv) syntax, (v) diachronic typology, (vi) semantics and pragmatics, and (vii) language contact, variation and diffusion. The topics discussed, often in a comparative perspective, feature a variety of languages and language families and cover a wide range of research areas. Novel analyses and often new diachronic data — also from less known and under-investigated languages — are provided to the debate on the principles, mechanisms, paths and models of language change, as well as the relationship between synchronic variation and diachrony. The volume is of interest to scholars of different persuasions working on all aspects of language change.
