Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) inspired and haunted an extraordinary number of exceptional atrists and writers, including Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, Martha Gelhorn, Ernest Hemingway, George Orwell, and John Dos Passos. It spurred breakthroughs in military and medical technology. New aircraft, weapons, tactics, and strategy all emerged in the intense Spanish conflict. Progress also arose from the horror: doctors and nurses who volunteered to serve with the Spanish defenders devised major advances in battlefield surgery and frontline blood tansfusion. Rhodes takes us into the battlefields, bomb shelters, and hospitals; into the studios of artists; and into the hearts and minds of a rich cast of characters, showing how the ideological, aesthetic, and technological developments that emerged in Spain changed the world forever." --

Book A Postcard View of Hell One Doughboy s Souvenir Album of the First World War

Download or read book A Postcard View of Hell One Doughboy s Souvenir Album of the First World War written by Frank Jacob and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2019-09-30 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many the postcard may seem trivial, little more than a mundane souvenir or a way to keep in touch with friends and relatives while on vacation. But if we look carefully, postcards offer valuable insights into the time periods in which they were created and the mentalities of those who bought or sent them. Frank Marhefka, while serving in the U.S. Army Motor Transportation Corps during the First World War, amassed a collection of more than 150 postcards and photographs while in France, and bound them into a souvenir album. Marhefka's collection provides a diverse and vivid look into a period of history that - in many soldiers' accounts - is not usually visualized with all its cruelties. Emphasizing the pictorial turn of the Great War, this album offers personal insight into a conflict that caused so much death and destruction. The book begins with an introduction providing a history of postcards and their extensive use by soldiers during the Great War. Then, after a biography of Marhefka, his postcard collection is presented in its entirety. Accompanying the images are brief texts that place them into historical context, as well as suggestions for further reading. As a visual artifact of the First World War and the perspective of one U.S. soldier, this book is aimed at students, scholars, postcard collectors, and general readers alike who have an interest in military history and popular culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: German art student Otto Schubert was 22 years old when he was drafted into the Great War. As the conflict unfolded, he painted a series of postcards that he sent to his sweetheart, Irma. During the battles of Ypres and Verdun, Schubert filled dozens of military-issued 4” x 6” cards with vivid images depicting the daily realities and tragedies of war. Beautifully illustrated with full-color reproductions of his exquisite postcards, as well as his wartime sketches, woodcuts, and two lithograph portfolios, Postcards from the Trenches is Schubert's war diary, love journal, and life story. His powerful artworks illuminate and document in a visual language the truths of war. Postcards from the Trenches offers the first full account of Otto Schubert, soldier-artist of the Great War, rising art star in the 1920s, prolific graphic artist and book illustrator, one of the “degenerate” artists defamed by the Nazis, and a man shattered by the Second World War and the Cold War. Created in the midst of enormous devastation, Schubert's haunting visual missives are as powerful and relevant today as they were a century ago. His postcards are both a young man's token of love and longing and a soldier's testimony of the Great War.

Book excerpt: Equal parts mail art, data visualization, and affectionate correspondence, Dear Data celebrates "the infinitesimal, incomplete, imperfect, yet exquisitely human details of life," in the words of Maria Popova (Brain Pickings), who introduces this charming and graphically powerful book. For one year, Giorgia Lupi, an Italian living in New York, and Stefanie Posavec, an American in London, mapped the particulars of their daily lives as a series of hand-drawn postcards they exchanged via mail weekly—small portraits as full of emotion as they are data, both mundane and magical. Dear Data reproduces in pinpoint detail the full year's set of cards, front and back, providing a remarkable portrait of two artists connected by their attention to the details of their lives—including complaints, distractions, phone addictions, physical contact, and desires. These details illuminate the lives of two remarkable young women and also inspire us to map our own lives, including specific suggestions on what data to draw and how. A captivating and unique book for designers, artists, correspondents, friends, and lovers everywhere.

Book Postcards from the Grave

Download or read book Postcards from the Grave written by Emir Suljagić and published by Saqi Books. This book was released on 2005 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: & Quot;In May 1992, while Serb nationalist forces 'cleansed' the towns and villages of the Drina valley in eastern Bosnia of their formerly majority Muslim population - as part of Slobodan Milosevic's criminal attempt to carve an expanded Serbia from the successor states of the former Yugoslav federation - thousands of fleeing, desperate people converged on the small town of Srebrenica in search of refuge." "For many of them this would prove to be a fatal decision. Serb forces besieged the town for three years, undeterred even when it was proclaimed a 'UN Safe Area'. As more and more refugees fled to Srebrenica from the surrounding villages, conditions there became unbearable: near-starvation, daily death, degradation of civilized life. The victims themselves were caught up in the dialectic of violence. Finally, after three years of agony, and as those sent to protect them stood by, Srebrenica was destroyed. In just a few days in July 1995 Bosnian Serb forces murdered some 8,000 people." "Against all odds Emir Suljagic survived, while the lives of nearly every man he had ever known - and those of many women too - were wiped out. His haunted record of those terrible times offers a fitting monument to those who died."--Jacket.

Book Military Strategy as Public Discourse

Download or read book Military Strategy as Public Discourse written by Tadd Sholtis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-04 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the current history of United States military strategy in Afghanistan as an example of dysfunctional policy discourse among the nation’s elites. The legitimacy of a country’s military strategy can become a subject of intense public debate and doubt, especially in prolonged conflicts. Arguments typically hinge on disagreements about the values at stake, the consequences of action or inaction, and the authority of those responsible for the plan. As the US entered its second decade at war in Afghanistan, political and military leaders struggled to explain the ends and means of their strategy through internal policy debates, the promotion of counterinsurgency doctrine, and day-to-day accounts of the war’s progress. Military Strategy as Public Discourse considers recent US strategy in Afghanistan as a form of valid and equitable public discussion among those with the ability to affect outcomes. The work examines the dominant forms of discourse used by the various groups of elites who make and execute strategy, and considers how representations of these forms of discourse in news media shapes elite understanding of the purpose of US efforts in wars of choice. The book proposes how policy-makers should address the problems of public discourse on war, which tends to exclude or marginalize relevant elites and focus on narrow questions of validity. This book will be of much interest to students of strategic studies, US foreign policy, and security studies in general.
