Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If the origin of the colonial period was accidental, the ending was not. The representatives of the thirteen colonies who approved the Declaration of Independence in 1776 charted a collision course, aware of the obstacles in their path and the risks they were taking. The events that led to their decision took place over a period of nearly 300 years. Looking back, the wonder is that it culminated so quickly. For a century after its discovery, the New World was little more than a lode to be mined by adventurers seeking profits. It wasn't until the end of the sixteenth century that serious efforts were made to establish permanent colonies. Even then, the perils of the journey and threats of starvation inhibited settlement. But settlers gradually came, spurred, in part, by the fear of religious persecution, but above all, drawn by the hope of owning land. They were a mixed lot: English Separatists from Leiden, French Huguenots, Dutch burghers, Mennonite peasants from the Rhine Valley, and a few gentleman Anglicans. But they shared a quality of toughness. Here is their story from award-winning historian Louis B. Wright.

Book excerpt: This book is intended as an historical reader, an elementary text-book in the history of our country, or as an introduction or supplement to any of the excellent text-books on the history of the United States now in use. The aim has been not only to interest children in the great men of their own country, but to stimulate them to the cultivation of the lofty virtues of which they read, and to instil within their hearts a deep love for their native land. All the main facts in our early history have been given as simply and vividly as possible, and the lessons of patriotism, truthfulness, courage, patience, honesty, and industry taught by the lives of our principal heroes are carefully enforced. Great pains have also been taken to relate all the well-known anecdotes and quote the famous speeches which are so frequently alluded to in our current literature.

Book excerpt: "The Thirteen Colonies" is a glance of the early Colonial American History of the thirteen colonies including the letter from the Iroquois Indian Tribe Chief Onondaga to the British Arms and Sir William Johnson. Chief Onondaga's Letter to the British Arms and Sir William Johnson and their response. “Brother: One of our People lately in a vision was told by the Great Spirit above, that when HE first made the World, He have this large island to the Indians for their Use; at the same time He gave other Parts of the World beyond the great Waters to the rest of his creating, and gave them different languages; That He now saw the white People squabbling, and fighting for these Lands which HE gave the Indians; and that in every Assembly, and Company of Governors, and Great Men, He heard nothing scarce spoke, or talk’d of, but claiming , and wanting, large Possessions in our Country. This He said was so contrary to his Intention, and what He expected would be the Consequences at the time when the white People first came, like Children among Us, that He was quite displeas’d and would, altho their Numbers were ever so great, punish them if They did not desist.” Chief Onondaga Tribe of The Iroquois League
