Book The New York Times Book Review

Download or read book The New York Times Book Review written by The New York Times and published by Clarkson Potter. This book was released on 2021-11-02 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “delightful” (Vanity Fair) collection from the longest-running, most influential book review in America, featuring its best, funniest, strangest, and most memorable coverage over the past 125 years. Since its first issue on October 10, 1896, The New York Times Book Review has brought the world of ideas to the reading public. It is the publication where authors have been made, and where readers first encountered the classics that have enriched their lives. Now the editors have curated the Book Review’s dynamic 125-year history, which is essentially the story of modern American letters. Brimming with remarkable reportage and photography, this beautiful book collects interesting reviews, never-before-heard anecdotes about famous writers, and spicy letter exchanges. Here are the first takes on novels we now consider masterpieces, including a long-forgotten pan of Anne of Green Gables and a rave of Mrs. Dalloway, along with reviews and essays by Langston Hughes, Eudora Welty, James Baldwin, Nora Ephron, and more. With scores of stunning vintage photographs, many of them sourced from the Times’s own archive, readers will discover how literary tastes have shifted through the years—and how the Book Review’s coverage has shaped so much of what we read today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They always win the halftime. Members of the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band, embodying the spirit, camaraderie, and excellence of the school they represent, have marched and played proudly for 125 years. Here is the story of the music, the precision, and the tradition of the exceptional band that marches to the beat pulsing through the spirit of Aggieland. Illustrated throughout with historical and contemporary images, this lively history pays tribute to the bandmasters and musicians who have made this organization the pride of Aggies everywhere. Organized around the tenure of its founder, Joseph Holick, and its directors—Richard J. Dunn, E. V. Adams, Joe T. Haney, Ray E. Toler, and Timothy B. Rhea—the book marches through 125 years of tradition and excellence. From the birth of the band, through the development of its marching style, to its most recent triumphs of precision maneuvers and military music, the story is as bold and bright as the band itself. War years, fish bands, boots, band lyres, corps trips, parades, and other traditions known and loved by former band members and other former students of Texas A&M University fill the book’s pages. An appendix lists all of the band’s eight thousand–plus present and former members. This is the story of the determination, discipline, and enduring pride that rests deep in the heart of those young men and women who have been tough enough, proud enough, and good enough to be the noble men and women of Kyle.

Drexel through to the present day. The editors and contributors create a prismatic discussion of the university and its evolution. Richly illustrated chapters cover the architectural history of notable Drexel buildings; the role of Drexel in Philadelphia’s modern history; its Greek life; sports—particularly Drexel’s history in the Big 5; and each of the university’s schools and colleges. There is a history of the medical college and law school, plus the creation of new schools such as those of biomedical engineering, science and health systems. Building Drexel also documents the civil rights history of Drexel and its urban planning history in relation to the racially diverse Powelton Village and Mantua neighborhoods it borders. This commemorative volume shows the development of the university both in the city and in the world. Book Dreams of Dignity Workers of Vision

Download or read book Dreams of Dignity Workers of Vision written by Grace Palladino and published by . This book was released on 2016-08-31 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1891, 10 delegates representing eight cities and 300 electrical workers met in St. Louis. Led by a Texas-born lineman named Henry Miller, their goal was to organize and improve working conditions in the rapidly growing but extremely dangerous electrical industry. From that meeting came the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, which has helped millions of workers in the United States and Canada rise up and join the middle class while also raising the quality of work in the electrical industry. In the follow-up to her history of the IBEW released in 1991, noted labor historian Grace Palladino adds three chapters covering the last 25 years. She reflects on a time of enormous challenges, such as globalization, which has roiled labor markets and sent jobs overseas. Internally, women and other underrepresented groups won more influence on union policy. The economic crisis of 2008 was devastating for wiremen and construction workers. But successfully meeting challenges has been an IBEW trademark throughout its 125-year history. An economic depression in the 1890s nearly destroyed the union before it got off the ground. So did the leadership split between Frank McNulty and James Reid from 1908-13. Internal divisions and right-to-work legislation caused deep rifts after World War II. But thanks to an engaged membership and inspirational leadership, the IBEW remains one of the world's leading trade unions. Palladino combines hours of research and interviews to bring this sometimes colorful history to life.
