Download or read book The Battered Woman Syndrome written by Lenore E. A. Walker, EdD and published by Springer Publishing Company. This book was released on 2016-10-28 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its focus on the connection between health and mental health symptoms, this seminal, groundbreaking work continues to forge new directions in the field of domestic violence. Describing a condition that is the basis for the battered woman defense--cited in cases of physically and psychologically abused women who have killed their abusers--it continues to be used as a defense to explain premeditated assault or murder. Completely updated, the fourth edition reflects the significant changes in the field since the book was last published, incorporating Affordable Care Act (ACA) guidelines on health care and domestic violence and data from the Adverse Childhood Experiences Study. It examines new research regarding battered women and cross-cultural and cross-national issues, and includes several new chapters addressing issues ranging from murder--suicide in domestic violence cases to proposed legislation and congressional resolutions. The fourth edition provides new findings worldwide that reinforce the cycle theory of violence. It reflects new research on traumatic responses, and addresses trauma-informed and trauma-specific psychotherapy, interventions with youth in juvenile detention centers, information from government task forces regarding children exposed to violence and juvenile justice, and new findings regarding the application of psychology to the legal system. Entirely new to the fourth edition is a section about reforming family court and divorce presumptions. This is crucial reading for nearly all health and mental health workers who may be called upon to ask clients about experiences of domestic violence and must respond knowledgeably and effectively. Download or read book Abortion written by Nada Logan Stotland and published by American Psychiatric Pub. This book was released on 1998 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where do you turn when you are wrestling with a painful decision? You turn to your spouse, trusted friends and relatives, to professionals, to religious advisers. But sometimes you want accurate information and suggestions all in one place, in a form you can use on your own. The decision to have an abortion is not an easy one, and it is not the right decision for every pregnant woman, even in difficult circumstances. Every situation is different. Women considering abortion range in age from nine to fifty-five years. They are rich and poor; married and unmarried; white, black, brown, yellow, and red; members of every religious group and ethnic origin; heterosexual and homosexual. Some have no one to talk to and others have too many people talking to them. Some are in danger from physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. Abortion: Facts and Feelings is for women who are considering whether to have an abortion, women who have had an abortion and want to do more thinking about it, and relatives, mates, lovers, friends, and health professionals who want to help the women they care for make the best possible choices for themselves. Partners in relationships, families, and friends, and, of course, pregnant women themselves, deserve to have accurate information about this common, but controversial, procedure -- information they can use to make both personal and policy decisions. This book contains that information. It discusses * The practice of abortion in other times and places, and practical information about how it is practiced now* How to find out about abortion laws where you live, and laws in other places where you might go if necessary* The attitudes of major North American religious groups about abortion, and how to obtain more specific information about the approaches of your religion to your situation* The medical and psychological outcomes of abortion* Alternatives to abortion -- delivering the baby and either caring for it yourself or allowing someone else to provide the parenting* The needs and concerns of women in special circumstances, and of women's loved ones Most important, it will help you think through and carry out your own decision, whatever it is.

Download or read book The Chronic Psychiatric Patient in the Community written by R.D. Budson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to present an integrated approach to the treatment of the chronic psychiatric patient living in the com munity. This requires that topics as diverse as pharmacokinetics, psychotherapy and community organization be appropriately coor dinated. Such an approach is partly complicated by the wide range of differences among patients, in terms of social skills, intellectual capacity and psychiatric diagnosis. In addition, unclear, insular or overlapping roles of various mental health disciplines further con found integrated treatment efforts. Given such complexity, any single clinician's point of view is sub ject to the distortion inherent in specialization. Too often a volume in the field of mental health focuses either on only one aspect or presents only one clinician's unique perspective of a task that is, in fact, multifaceted. We have tried to avoid this pitfall by having representatives from many of the concerned professions present a variety of treatment approaches and associated issues in one text. Further, the editors have attempted to illuminate the relevant clinical and/or administrative interrelationship between the subjects of each section through a succinct introductory commentary. The book is divided into five sections. The first section represents an attempt to address some of the interactive sociological, psycho logical and pharmacological background issues common to all at tempts at treatment of this population.
