Book Mr Benn Red Knight

Download or read book Mr Benn Red Knight written by David McKee and published by Tate. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the welcomed re-release of Big-Top Benn comes another addition to the immensely popular collection of original Mr Benn adventures by author and illustrator David McKee. First published in 1967, Mr Benn: Red Knight introduces the friendly bowler-hatted character who delighted children a generation ago, and again today. In this fun story, Mr Benn finds himself transported to a medieval world, where he assists an unfortunate dragon whose role as firelighter to the king is threatened by a greedy matchmaker. McKee's original artwork will entrance children of all ages in what is sure to become a cult classic for yet another generation of readers. Praise for Mr. Benn: Red Knight: "The rerelease of this 1967 series opener introduces an adult picture-book hero who combines a childlike disposition with a taste for costumes, a belief in the fantastic, and terrific problem-solving skills. The Brit in a bowler hat needs something unusual to wear to a fancy dress party. He finds a promising little shop that delivers in spades once he dons a red suit of knight's armor. Transported from the fitting room into a story in which a poor dragon has been ousted from the village by the appearance of a match salesman, Mr. Benn acts as an intermediary and gets the dragon a better job-as the king's fire-lighter. Through another door and back in the dressing room, he decides he doesn't need to go to the party after all, but promises to come back to the shop for more adventures. McKee's iconic 1960's artwork alternates pen-and-ink line drawings with richly colored, multilayered tone-on-tone illustrations. The conversational narrative serves as a lovely counterpoint to the fantastical story; it's no surprise that the tales have been animated for British television." - School Library Journal

  • Pages : 208 pages

Download or read book Urban Morphology written by Vítor Oliveira and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-03-30 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about cities or, more precisely, about the physical form of cities. It starts presenting the main elements of urban form – streets, urban blocks, plots and buildings – structuring our cities and the fundamental actors and processes of transformation shaping these elements. It then applies this analytical framework to describe the evolution of cities over history as well as to explain the functioning of contemporary cities. After the initial focus on the ‘object’ (cities) the book describes how different researchers and different schools of thought have been dealing with this object since the emergence of Urban Morphology, as the science of urban form, in the turning to the twentieth century. Finally, the book tries to identify what are the most important (and specific) contributions that Urban Morphology has to offer to contemporary cities, societies and economies.

Book The Role of Biofilms in Device Related Infections

Download or read book The Role of Biofilms in Device Related Infections written by Mark Shirtliff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-19 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 60% of all hospital-associated infections, over one million cases per year, are due to biofilms that have formed on indwelling medical devices. Device-related biofilm infections increase hospital stays and add over one billion dollars/year to U.S. hospitalization costs. Since the use and the types of indwelling medical devices commonly used in modern healthcare are continuously expanding, especially with an aging population, the incidence of biofilm infections will also continue to rise. The central problem with microbial biofilm infections of foreign bodies is their propensity to resist clearance by the host immune system and all antimicrobial agents tested to date. In fact, compared to their free floating, planktonic counterparts, microbes within a biofilm are 50 – 500 times more resistant to antimicrobial agents. Therefore, achieving therapeutic and non-lethal dosing regimens within the human host is impossible. The end result is a conversion from an acute infection to one that is persistent, chronic, and recurrent, most often requiring device removal in order to eliminate the infection. This text will describe the major types of device-related infections, and will explain the host, pathogen, and the unique properties of their interactions in order to gain a better understanding of these recalcitrant infections.

Book Disaster Management in China in a Changing Era

Download or read book Disaster Management in China in a Changing Era written by Yi Kang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-10-03 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how Chinese officials have responded to popular and international pressure, while at the same time seeking to preserve their own careers, in the context of disaster management. Using the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake as a case study, it illustrates how authoritarian regimes are creating new governance mechanisms in response to the changing global environment and what challenges they are confronted with in the process. The book examines both the immediate and long-term effects of a major disaster on China’s policy, institutions, and governing practices, and seeks to explain which factors lead to hasty and poorly conceived reconstruction efforts, which in turn reproduce the very same conditions of vulnerability or expose communities to new risks. In short, it tells a “political” story of how intra-governmental interactions, state-society relations, and international engagement can shape the processes and outcomes of recovery and reconstruction.

In other words: what happens in the minds of people before they decide to use political violence as means to attain their goals? Also this book asks: what has to happen in the minds of people in order to preclude them from using political violence as a way of attaining their goals? This volume unites scholars from several disciplines and perspectives from a number of different geographical, social and cultural contexts with the overarching aim to refine our understanding of what ‘radicalization’ actually implies.

Download or read book Nursing as Therapy written by Richard McMahon and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past 20years, nursing has begun to rediscover some of its basic 'truths' which have become obscured because of the rise in technology and medical knowledge this century. One of these basic 'truths' is the concern of this book - that intelligent, sensitive nursing does make a difference to the consumers of health care. Like most essential truths, this seems almost too obvious to be stated. Nevertheless, many nurses have become increasingly aware of a commonly held view that ,getting better' or staying healthy is largely dependent upon the intervention of or monitoring by medical practitioners and paramedical therapists together with the technology they use and that nurses merely carry out the orders of such workers and keep things in order. An apt analogy, frequently used, is that of the air journey. The point of the journey is to get from A to Band is largely dependentupon the aeroplane (i.e. the technology in health care) and the crew in the cockpit (i.e.

Book A History of Disease in Ancient Times

Download or read book A History of Disease in Ancient Times written by Philip Norrie and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-25 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how bubonic plague and smallpox helped end the Hittite Empire, the Bronze Age in the Near East and later the Carthaginian Empire. The book will examine all the possible infectious diseases present in ancient times and show that life was a daily struggle for survival either avoiding or fighting against these infectious disease epidemics. The book will argue that infectious disease epidemics are a critical link in the chain of causation for the demise of most civilizations in the ancient world and that ancient historians should no longer ignore them, as is currently the case.

Book Industrial Environmental Chemistry

Download or read book Industrial Environmental Chemistry written by Donald T. Sawyer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph consists of manuscripts submitted by invited speakers who participated in the symposium "Industrial Environmental Chemistry: Waste Minimization in Industrial Processes and Remediation of Hazardous Waste," held March 24-26, 1992, at Texas A&M University. This meeting was the tenth annual international symposium sponsored by the Texas A&M Industry-University Cooperative Chemistry Program (IUCCP). The program was developed by an academic-industrial steering committee consisting of the co-chairmen, Professors Donald T. Sawyer and Arthur E. Martell of the Texas A&M University Chemistry Department, and members appointed by the sponsoring companies: Bernie A. Allen, Jr., Dow Chemical USA; Kirk W. Brown, Texas A&M University; Abraham Clearfield, Texas A&M University; Greg Leyes, Monsanto Company; Jay Warner, Hoechst-Celanese Corporation; Paul M. Zakriski, BF Goodrich Company; and Emile A. Schweikert, Texas A&M University (IUCCP Coordinator). The subject of this conference reflects the interest that has developed in academic institutions and industry for technological solutions to environmental contamination by industrial wastes. Progress is most likely with strategies that minimize waste production from industrial processes. Clearly the key to the protection and preservation of the environment will be through R&D that optimizes chemical processes to minimize or eliminate waste streams. Eleven of the papers are directed to waste minimization. An additional ten papers discuss chemical and biological remediation strategies for hazardous wastes that contaminate soils, sludges, and water.
