Book excerpt: The book consists primarily of interviews between Strobel (a former legal editor at the Chicago Tribune) and biblical scholars such as Bruce Metzger. Each interview is based on a simple question, concerning historical evidence (for example, "Can the Biographies of Jesus Be Trusted?"), scientific evidence, ("Does Archaeology Confirm or Contradict Jesus' Biographies?"), and "psychiatric evidence" ("Was Jesus Crazy When He Claimed to Be the Son of God?"). Together, these interviews compose a case brief defending Jesus' divinity, and urging readers to reach a verdict of their own.

Book Sermons on the Passion of Jesus Christ Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sermons on the Passion of Jesus Christ Classic Reprint written by John McQuirk and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on the Passion of Jesus Christ We can never at all realize or even have any idea of the meaning of the great, the stupendous fact which the Church today commemorates, unless we know and keep before us, Who it is that suffers on the cross. Hence I begin our instruction with asking - Who is it that hangs, agonizing and suffering, on the hill of Calvary? It is Jesus Christ, at once God and Man, the Eternal Word and Wisdom Of the Godhead, the very Figure of His substance and the Splendor of His glory; He before Whom the worlds tremble and the Angels are not pure. It is He Who from the beginning was in the Father; in Whom and by Whom and through Whom all things have been made; the Second adorable Person of the Blessed Trinity, and no less. Let this truth sink deep into your souls; for without it Calvary has no meaning. If Christ were but a mere man, His Sacrifice would not be that which it claims to be, and which it is our hope and security and salvation that it is. Book The Passion and Death of Our Lord Jesus Christ

Download or read book The Passion and Death of Our Lord Jesus Christ written by Alban Goodier and published by Scepter Publishers. This book was released on 2017-03-31 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archbishop Alban Goodier, S.J. fills in the many blanks in the historical narratives about the Passion of Jesus Christ with a riveting account based on history, culture and his own deep spiritual insights. He brings to life and unifies the many observations, emotions and subtle and not-so-subtle actions that revolve around the person of God the Son as he faces his most tragic and triumphant moment. The author’s unique approach intersperses Scripture accounts with the commentary of an incisive narrator who sifts and judges from the span of hundreds of years. He draws from the obvious as well as the obscure, and finds supernatural meaning in the most mundane actions that surround the suffering Christ. In the hands of this writer, the Lord’s few words, accompanied by the author’s commentary, challenge contemporary believers as much as they did those who first followed in the footsteps of Christ and his apostles. The author was born in 1869 in Lancashire, northern England and educated at the prominent Catholic college, Stonyhurst, which has been the source of many English Catholic politicians, intellectuals and business people. After a degree from the University of London, he was ordained a Jesuit in 1903. He served as archbishop of Bombay from 1919 to 1926 and returned to England to write and serve as a chaplain until his death in 1939.

Book The Passion and the Death of Jesus Christ

Download or read book The Passion and the Death of Jesus Christ written by St. Alphonsus De Liguori and published by . This book was released on 1887 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alphonsus Liguori examines the final days and crucifixion of Jesus, visiting the subject with intense detail and close readings of the Gospel scriptures. The final days and hours of Christ's life contain some of the most important events in Christianity. Jesus was innocent of any crime: his unjust execution, and horrific treatment at the hands of a mob as he went to his place of death, form the basis of the idea that Christ died for the sins of humanity. This commentary explains the role of Pontius Pilate, King Herod, and others present at the time of Christ's sentencing and crucifixion, with individual topics and episodes in the story discussed at length. The work contains ample referencing and quotations of the Gospels in Latin, that readers may refer to the story. The author was a priest and later a bishop working in the Catholic Church in the 1700s. Liguori's scholarly abilities brought him renown, his prolific researches and writings gained favor with church and academic scholars and theologians. The sagely wisdom which he dispensed moral theology and devotional histories of Christianity across volumes resulted in his being canonized as a saint by Pope Pius IX in 1839.
