Download or read book I Drink Therefore I Am written by Roger Scruton and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-01-03 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here Scruton explains the connection between good wine and serious thought with a heady mix of humour and philosophy. We are familiar with the medical opinion that a daily glass of wine is good for the health and also the rival opinion that any more than a glass or two will set us on the road to ruin. Whether or not good for the body, Scruton argues, wine, drunk in the right frame of mind, is definitely good for the soul. And there is no better accompaniment to wine than philosophy. By thinking with wine, you can learn not only to drink in thoughts but to think in draughts. This good-humoured book offers an antidote to the pretentious clap-trap that is written about wine today and a profound apology for the drink on which civilisation has been founded. In vino veritas.

Download or read book Enrique Granados written by Walter Aaron Clark and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 2006 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Granados was among the leading pianists of his time, and his eloquence at the keyboard inspired critics to dub him the "poet of the piano." In Enrique Granados: Poet of the Piano, Walter Aaron Clark offers the first substantive study in English of this virtuoso pianist, composer, and music pedagogue. While providing detailed analyses of his major works for voice, piano, and the stage, Clark argues that Granados's art represented a unifying presence on the cultural landscape of Spain during a period of imperial decline, political unrest, and economic transformation. Drawing on newly discovered documents, Clark explores the cultural spheres in which Granados moved, particularly of Castile and Catalonia. Granados's best-known music was inspired by the art of Francisco Goya, especially the Goyescas suite for solo piano that became the basis for the opera. These pieces evoked the colorful and dramatic world that Goya inhabited and depicted in his art. Granados's fascination with Goya's Madrid set him apart from fellow nationalists Albeniz and Falla, who drew their principal inspiration from Andalusia. Though he was resolutely apolitical, Granados's attraction to Castile antagonized some Catalan nationalists, who resented Castilian domination. Yet, Granados also made important contributions to Catalan musical theater and was a prominent figure in the modernist movement in Barcelona.".

Download or read book Granados Romantic and Poetic Scenes written by Enrique Granados and published by Mel Bay Publications. This book was released on 2010-10-07 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enrique Granados (1867-1916), one of Spain's greatest twentieth-century composers, was a fine pianist and teacher who composed numerous works for the piano, his favorite instrument. His Escenas Poeticas (Poetic Scenes) and Escenas Romanticas (Romantic Scenes) are two suites which show pianistic influences of Grieg, Schumann and Liszt. These two suites are not as well known in America, nor are they as "Spanish sounding" as some of his other works; however, they still reflect the composer's original compositional style and beautiful melodic writing. the Escenas Romanticas contains six pieces from easy to difficult, while the Escenas Poeticas has three pieces mostly easy to medium in difficulty. This is the first transcription and arrangement of these works for guitar. They are written in standard notation only.

Download or read book Coros Y Danzas written by Daniel David Jordan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book explores how women of the early Franco regime (1939-53) adapted rural music traditions and Spanish nationalism according to different political circumstances. The Sección Femenina (Women's Section) of the fascist Falange party officially represented the regime's views and policies on female gender roles. Through their Music Department, these women shaped traditional Spanish songs and dances to promote ideas of Catholic morality throughout the nation's culturally diverse regions, helped legitimize colonial involvement in Spain's African territories, and formed political ties with the Allied powers after the Second World War. This book is particularly relevant to readers with interests in 20th-century Spanish history, cultural diplomacy, and the Cold War"--
