Book The Biotechnology Revolution in Global Agriculture

Download or read book The Biotechnology Revolution in Global Agriculture written by Peter W. B. Phillips and published by CABI. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biotechnology processes are fundamentally changing the nature of the products being produced in the industry. Canola has been developed in Canada through such processes. It is a type of rapeseed that has an enhanced level of mono-unsaturated fatty acids, thus producing a healthier oil for human consumption. It is now being introduced to many other countries. This book reviews for the first time the global canola sector in order to identify fundamental trends resulting from the adoption of biotechnology. It examines the canola sector over an extended period, looking at its local origins, regional growth and international expansion, analyses of public policy affecting commercialisation, estimates of the costs and benefits of changes. It is essential reading for government and industry researchers and students involved in the areas of agricultural economics, plant biotechnology and crop science.

Wild Crop Relatives: Genomic and Breeding Resources comprises 10 volumes on Cereals, Millets and Grasses, Oilseeds, Legume Crops and Forages, Vegetables, Temperate Fruits, Tropical and Subtropical Fruits, Industrial Crops, Plantation and Ornamental Crops, and Forest Trees. It contains 125 chapters written by nearly 400 well-known authors from about 40 countries.

Book Quantitative Genetics Genomics and Plant Breeding 2nd Edition

Download or read book Quantitative Genetics Genomics and Plant Breeding 2nd Edition written by Manjit S. Kang and published by CABI. This book was released on 2020-04-01 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents state-of-the-art, authoritative chapters on contemporary issues in the broad areas of quantitative genetics, genomics and plant breeding. Section 1 (Chapters 2 to 12) emphasizes the application of genomics, and genome and epigenome editing techniques, in plant breeding; bioinformatics; quantitative trait loci mapping; and the latest approaches of examining and exploiting genotype-environment interactions. Section 2 (Chapters 13 to 20) represents the intersection of breeding, genetics and genomics. This section describes the use of cutting-edge molecular breeding and quantitative genetics techniques in wheat, rice, maize, root and tuber crops and pearl millet. Overall, the book focuses on using genomic information to help evaluate traits that can combat biotic/abiotic stresses, genome-wide association mapping, high-throughput genotyping/phenotyping, biofortification, use of big data, orphan crops, and gene editing techniques. The examples featured are taken from across crop science research and cover a wide geographical base.

Book Sustainable strategies for managing Brassica napus oilseed rape resistance to Leptosphaeria maculans phoma stem canker

Download or read book Sustainable strategies for managing Brassica napus oilseed rape resistance to Leptosphaeria maculans phoma stem canker written by B.D.L. Fitt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-01-24 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Control of phoma stem canker in oil rapeseed crops typically depends on cultivars resistant to L. Maculans, the virus that causes it. Recently, virus populations have overcome resistance, causing serious canker outbreaks in Australia and Europe. There is an urgent need to find sources of resistance to L. maculans. This book synthesizes studies in management of resistance genes control L. maculans, and will stimulate further research on this important model system.

Book Biotechnologies of Crop Improvement Volume 3

Download or read book Biotechnologies of Crop Improvement Volume 3 written by Satbir Singh Gosal and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-09 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past 15 years, cellular and molecular approaches have emerged as valuable adjuncts to supplement and complement conventional breeding methods for a wide variety of crop plants. Biotechnology increasingly plays a role in the creation, conservation, characterization and utilization of genetic variability for germplasm enhancement. For instance, anther/microspore culture, somaclonal variation, embryo culture and somatic hybridization are being exploited for obtaining incremental improvement in the existing cultivars. In addition, genes that confer insect- and disease-resistance, abiotic stress tolerance, herbicide tolerance and quality traits have been isolated and re-introduced into otherwise sensitive or susceptible species by a variety of transgenic techniques. Together these transformative methodologies grant access to a greater repertoire of genetic diversity as the gene(s) may come from viruses, bacteria, fungi, insects, animals, human beings, unrelated plants or even be artificially derived. Remarkable achievements have been made in the production, characterization, field evaluation and commercialization of transgenic crop varieties worldwide. Likewise, significant advances have been made towards increasing crop yields, improving nutritional quality, enabling crops to be raised under adverse conditions and developing resistance to pests and diseases for sustaining global food and nutritional security. The overarching purpose of this 3-volume work is to summarize the history of crop improvement from a technological perspective but to do so with a forward outlook on further advancement and adaptability to a changing world. Our carefully chosen “case studies of important plant crops” intend to serve a diverse spectrum of audience looking for the right tools to tackle complicated local and global issues.
