Book Companion Studies to the History of Tamil Literature

Download or read book Companion Studies to the History of Tamil Literature written by K.V. Zvelebil and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-12-06 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a number of problems connected with the study and teaching of any Oriental literature in general and of Tamil literature specifically which have to date been mostly ignored, although they are indispensable for solid knowledge and correct interpretation and understanding of the literature in question. These include problems of authenticity and authorship, of transmission and tradition, writing tools and materials, of relationship of orality to literacy, of Sanskrit to Tamil, the prehistory of Tamil written literature, the numerous texts that have been lost, scholarly lineages and the rediscovery of ancient Tamil literature etc. The book deals with all these problems as well as with some specific Tamil cultural phenomena such as the concept of "threefold Tamil" or the relationship of literature ('marked') to grammar ('marker'), with the derivation of the term "Tamil" and with the history of Tamil literary historiography. It will be indispensable as an introduction to the study of the more than 2000 years of Tamil literary history. By addressing questions which have thus far been almost completely neglected, it has also decisive impact on the interpretative comprehension of Tamil literature and on the teaching of this very rich heritage of verbal art.

Book Religion and Public Culture

Download or read book Religion and Public Culture written by Keith E. Yandell Keith E. Yandell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-19 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last two centuries have witnessed profound changes in the nature of public consciousness. Nowhere has this been more true than in India, especially in relation to changing cultures of public life and religious tradition in South India. Essays in this collection attempt to explore the intricacies of what is perhaps the single most complex socio-religious environment in the world. The essays consider the evolution of the notion of Hinduism as a distinct and singular separate religion; the relationship between this kind of formulation and various European or western influences in India; and differences which the formation of this idea and its acceptance have made upon wider public consciousness. Each essay also considers certain general issues - such as the passing along of religious authority from one generation to the next, and the rise of disputes over matters both ideological (or doctrinal) and institutional, disputes that are fundamental to the traditions concerned and yet have unmistakable cross-cultural references.

Book Multi Disciplinary Approach to Research Emerging Paradigms

Download or read book Multi Disciplinary Approach to Research Emerging Paradigms written by Dr. Santosh Dhar and published by Allied Publishers. This book was released on 2022-03-26 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multidisciplinary approach in research is very much in vogue these days to address the problems of the society. It involves drawing appropriately from multiple disciplines to explore problems outside the normal boundaries and reach out to solutions addressed through different perspectives. Modern research looks through more multidisciplinary approaches and has dominance of problem solving and project oriented applied research. Multidisciplinary approaches while aiming at achieving a common goal attempts to develop answers to complex questions, which a single discipline is unable to handle. The growing research canon is to apply knowledge of various disciplines for the solution. Since current problems are of complex nature, there is a need to have knowledge of all the aspects such as economic, social, political and psychological. Multi-disciplinary approaches call for collaboration between two or more disciplines on a research project, while each discipline maintaining its assumptions, values, and methods. In other words, each discipline maintains its autonomy while collaborating. Today multidisciplinary approach is considered as the driver of innovation and research to solve real world problems. Book The Multivalence of an Epic

Download or read book The Multivalence of an Epic written by Parul Pandya Dhar and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-10-06 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines The Rāmāyaṇa traditions of South India and Southeast Asia. Bringing together 19 well-known scholars in Rāmāyaṇa studies from Cambodia, Canada, France, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, UK, and USA, this thought-provoking and elegantly illustrated volume engages with the inherent plurality, diversity, and adaptability of the Rāmāyaṇa in changing socio-political, religious, and cultural contexts. The journey and localization of the Rāmāyaṇa is explored in its manifold expressions – from classical to folk, from temples and palaces to theatres and by-lanes in cities and villages, and from ancient to modern times. Regional Rāmāyaṇas from different parts of South India and Southeast Asia are placed in deliberate juxtaposition to enable a historically informed discussion of their connected pasts across land and seas. The three parts of this volume, organized as visual, literary, and performance cultures, discuss the sculpted, painted, inscribed, written, recited, and performed Rāmāyaṇas. A related emphasis is on the way boundaries of medium and genre have been crossed in the visual, literary, and performed representations of the Rāmāyaṇa. Print edition not for sale in South Asia (India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Bhutan)
