Book excerpt: The Pollution Prevention Handbook provides the necessary tools to set up a successful pollution program; implement specific projects to meet environmental regulation, and improve efficiency and product quality. Methods used to reduce waste generation are illustrated, and new treatment methods to reduce the volume or toxicity of waste are described. Practical examples illustrate key concepts, and numerous case studies provide successful programs found in the real world. The text is divided into three major sections:
Download or read book What Is an Event written by Robin Wagner-Pacifici and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2017-03-24 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even though September 11 hovers over this mesmerizing look into the nature of eventsit was the fall of the Twin Towers that inspired Robin Wagner-Pacifici initiallythe richly evocative and thoughtful story she tells scales up to the level of major historical events and it scales down to the micro-level of ruptures in individual lives. Wagner-Pacifici moves back and forth between events experienced with all their vivid, pulsating, and demanding realities, and events understood systematically and conceptually. It is an astonishing achievement: a book that works with events, and a book that builds a model for analyzing them. She makes contact with specific eventful ruptures and turning-points; she analyzes how events erupt and take off from the ground of ongoing, everyday life, and how they move across time and landscapes. What Is an Event gives us a crystalline condensation of idea, image, analysis, and act, teasing out multiple possibilities for conceiving of events in series, in ruptures, in causal mechanisms, in short and long duration, and in their reception by the public. Wagner-Pacifici peppers each chapter with brilliant, vivifying examples: from 9/11 (four air hijackings, with multiple target sites, propelling the event from rupture, to accident, to incident, to attack, to war in rapid fashion, and on to the trial of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and the memorial museum at ground zero, and so much else) to the shooting in Camus s The Stranger to the shooting of Trayvon Martin. There is much in between. These examples take on the form of exemplars, models, paradigms. They show the productive pathways that keep events alive and coherent, and uncover the mechanisms by which forces and agents attempt to shape and move events. This book changes the conversation about how history is made."

Download or read book Foreign Compound Metabolism in Mammals written by D E Hathway and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside flap of this volume.

Download or read book Solidarity with Solidarity written by Idesbald Goddeeris and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2012-07-10 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Polish crisis in the early 1980s provoked a great deal of reaction in the West. Not only governments, but social movements were also touched by the establishment of the Iindependent Trade Union Solidarnosc in the summer of 1980, the proclamation of martial law in December 1981, and Solidarnosc's underground activity in the subsequent years. In many countries, campaigns were set up in order to spread information, raise funds, and provide the Polish opposition with humanitarian relief and technical assistance. Labor movements especially stepped into the limelight. A number of Western European unions were concerned about the new international tension following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the new hard-line policy of the US and saw Solidarnosc as a political instrument of clerical and neo-conservative cold warriors. This book analyzes reaction to Solidarnosc in nine Western European countries and within the international trade union confederations. It argues that Western solidarity with Solidarnosc was highly determined by its instrumental value within the national context. Trade unions openly sided with Solidarnosc when they had an interest in doing so, namely when Solidarnosc could strengthen their own program or position. But this book also reveals that reaction in allegedly reluctant countries was massive, albeit discreet, pragmatic, and humanitarian, rather than vocal, emotional, and political.

This special volume demonstrates the dramatic changes in alkaloidchemistry since then. It also offers a unique overview of recent developments in major areas of alkaloid chemistry and biology and looks at how these areas will develop in the future. These fourteen contributions are written by many of the leading alkaloid chemists in the world, and thus comprise a unique view of alkaloids and their contributions to the health and well-being of humankind. - Unique contributions from twenty of the world's leading alkaloid chemists - Critical reviews of the major progress in alkaloid chemistry - Considered commentary on the future of alkaloid chemistry - State-of-the-art insight into the role of alkaloids in the health sciences, biotechnology, and the elucidation of fundamental biological processes
